I had a Savage Scout for years, the earlier non-Accustock version, and I liked the concept so well that I traded it off towards a Steyr Scout. The Savage was accurate and completely reliable, certainly better value-per-dollar than the Austrian gun.
Some guys loved the forward-mounted scout scope, as I did. However, I had several friends who intensely disliked it, and had no interest in becoming proficient with it. It does take some practice. I would definitely suggest that, if possible, you handle and shoot a gun with a forward-mounted scope so that you know what you are getting into. If it isn't your cup of tea, you might be better off with something like the Precision Carbine. Or, since you are talking about mostly 200-yards or less, you might think about a red-dot on the Scout rifle. That way, you get to keep the neat little receiver peep sight as a back-up.
Buster95, thanks for those links...I think I just fell in love with the Alaskan Brush Hunter.
