hello im looking to get a a rifle of decently powerful capability with back up sights like the savage chambered in 308 win. i am woundering if it would be reliable in the bush up north. i may also be using for black bear protection. but mostly deer with in 200 yards and maybe a little bit of hogs.
thanks.

Maybe a better choice http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/11HOGHUNTER available in .223, .308 and .338 win, here's another option http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/116ALASKANBRUSHHUNTER and this one is available in .338 win and 375 Ruger. And they are less expensive than the scout but the stock is not an accustock just the ordinary stock.

thanks, but not interested in the hog hunter and like i said im only going to be using for deer and black bear defence so i dont need a huge 338 win or 375 ruger. 308 will be the best for me.

Prophet River has recently posted a few nice Rugers in .308 win with iron sights.
I really like the "Compact Magnum" version in .308, the 13" length of pull could be remedied by putting on a thicker recoil pad.
I couldn't resist the stainless International. :)

I had a Savage Scout for years, the earlier non-Accustock version, and I liked the concept so well that I traded it off towards a Steyr Scout. The Savage was accurate and completely reliable, certainly better value-per-dollar than the Austrian gun.

Some guys loved the forward-mounted scout scope, as I did. However, I had several friends who intensely disliked it, and had no interest in becoming proficient with it. It does take some practice. I would definitely suggest that, if possible, you handle and shoot a gun with a forward-mounted scope so that you know what you are getting into. If it isn't your cup of tea, you might be better off with something like the Precision Carbine. Or, since you are talking about mostly 200-yards or less, you might think about a red-dot on the Scout rifle. That way, you get to keep the neat little receiver peep sight as a back-up.

Buster95, thanks for those links...I think I just fell in love with the Alaskan Brush Hunter.

The hoghunter is available in 308, shorter barrel. i would think it is fitting your specs to a tee. Other than that, one can go for a Ruger scout (kinda expensive), Remington models or Weatherby carbine. I own a Weatherby carbine in 308 and love it. I bubba'd the stock so that it would free float and be easier and lighter. Came with Williams sights.

Is this the sort of thing you are looking for?

The Savage Scout will be a good answer. The action is the same basic design used for many years in a variety of Savage models and reliability is not a subject of complaint. They come drilled and tapped for conventional scope mounting so if you find you don't care for the forward mounted scope it is no trouble to put a normal scope on it. And you are right about .308 for the applications you mentioned.
