I am acquiring a Savage 10 TR in 308 Winchester with a 24" 1-10 twist barrel
My main interest is in Hunting with this rifle with main emphasis on Coyote, Wolf, Bear, White Tail, and occasionally Calf Moose. Have a 300 win Mag if ever lucky enough to get a adult tag.

My thoughts are Sierra 165 gr BTHP with a good load of Imr 4064 Will also try Sierra 165 BTSP but I have been told the BTHP are tougher.

any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks Jack

I have had excellent success with the 168 btsp in my savage 308 over about 42gr of imr 4320 and great accuracy as well . Boat tails have held up well for me in all larger game in my 308 right up to adult moose .I haven't used imr4064 in the 308 more for the reason I have alot of 4320 on hand and use it in several calibers . As for coyote I was dropping them out to 600 yards with that load it just destoyed the hides . You should be fine with your.choice. the twist you are using will stabilize the 165 quite well .
Good hunting

I also have and very excellent results with Sierra 165gr BTSP(game king) in a Savage model 11 with a 22" barrel with a Redfield Renegade on top . It was dads moose rifle but ended up getting 2 deer with it instead. After the performance on the deer I would not think twice on taking a big bull at 250 yards with this rifle.. The load I have for the rifle is a little over max but not showing any signs of pressure at all.. The powder is Benchmark.. primer is a CCI BR2 and the Case is a Remington.. Muzzle velocity is around the 2700fps mark and the groups are 3/4inch at 200yards off a Lead Sled which is just about perfect for that bullet... and if your thinking twice about taking a moose with it.. dont.. i have taken moose with a 140gr Winchester CXP 2 in my 6.5x55 at that range and less velocity.. My new 6.5x55 load is also a Sierra Game King 140gr at the 2700 mark.. These bullets just shine at that range I have found. They hold together well and hit like like a fright train. Good luck on your load development.. try Varget if you can get your hands on it..

I can't imagine the BTHP being tougher than the BTSP but the Gameking is a great bullet and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on game. A slightly better choice might be an Accubond, being a little tougher than the Gameking. Varget or RL15 would be my choice of powders though if you wanted to experiment a little you could likely get very good performance if you give RL17 or N550 a try. A co-worker of mine is picking up one of these as well. Could be an interesting little rifle.
