I've been trying different types of factory ammo through my new savage and haven't really had fantastic results. I've used winchester 55grn white box, federal classic 55grn,winchester 64grn powerpoint plus and hornady tap 75grn.The best group so far is an inch and 3/4 at a hundred yards was with the hornady 75grn.The rest have been 2in to 3 inches wich seems far from the norm as what i have herd about these rifles.
I have checked all screws for being tight and the scope(bushnell 3200 10x ) came off another rifle with no issues.
I am going to pick up some dies next weekend and see if hand loading will improve my groups.
The rifle has a 1 in 9 twist and the soft savage stock.

Are you shooting from a bipod? Could be user error.
When I sighted in my 22-250 I used a bench rest holder (dont know the name of it) and was able to make groups in one hole.
But as soon as I went to the bipod the groups opened up, but are now getting smaller with more practice.

xcr800,

I would stick with the heavier bullets (anywhere between 68 and 80 grains). As for factory ammo, I haven't really put any through my 223 but once you get your dies, give me a shout and I'll give you a couple of loads to try out. You should be hitting 1/4 inch or less with that gun. :) glocker

Handloading will reduce the groups. Try some match bullets, 69 gr, 75 gr maybe some 80's. Seat the bullets about .010 off the lands and you will be good to go.
