Savage 10FP: McM 26" or HS 24" ???

Glad you've found one M.Sparkles...Let us know how it goes..I should have feedback for my .223 HS-Precision 10FP in the near future
 
It arrived from P&D today! :) They sure are nice folks to deal with.

I don't even think the box had ever been opened! That the way I like 'em... factory fresh.
 
I was looking at HS's website and damn. They have some nice rifles. I mean like really nice. Are they all custom made or do they just make their own stock and throw it on a Savage rifle or something similar to that?
 
They make thier own action as well (or actually, have it made for them I believe). They do build a nice rifle, but a friend of mine got his without the barrel torqued in, it turned out as he shot it. Everyone has Monday and Friday cars I guess. On the other hand, until the barrel backed out, it was an honest to god 1/3 MOA rifle with fed 168 gr Gold Medal Match. Personally, I have never had a problem with any of HS's products, and I've owned quite a few of them over the years. FWIW - dan

Just put it together this afternoon - hope to sight it in tomorrow.

Cost as follows (not including taxes):

- Rifle = $900 (P&D)
- Scope = $240 (Wholesale Sports)
- Base and Rings = $150 (### International)
- Bipod = $90 (Russells Sports)
- Stock Pack = $40 (Dave's Surplus)

Total = $1420

The HS Precision has an aluminum bedding block, so no additional bedding is required.

I believe the Mcmillan does not have any bedding block or pillar bedding, so glass bedding will be required, so factor at least an additional $80 bedding cost (unless you do it yourself) to the total cost of the McMillan

Yes, but the McMillan is still a better stock and does it really need to be bedded, I don;t think so, but it would not hurt, also the McMillan model has an extra 2' on the barrel.

You can't just make a broad statement like "the McMillan is a better stock." What are some of the facts that you know of that make it better ? I am interested in your experience, especially regarding bedding not being necessary on the McMillan.

Hate to break it to you but quite a number of people are skim bedding the HS stocks for 100% perfect contact between the receiver and aluminum blocks. That way, you don't have to put overly excessive torque into the screws just to "sandwhich" the stock to the receiver.
 
I can make a broad statement like that and I did. In my opinion the McMillan is a better stock and I bet a lot of shooters on this site would agree. On my experience, do you really want to know or can I please keep that classified? I have owned 2 of these Savage rifle and several HS stocked rifles and all have shot fantastic, and I know there are others on this site that would agree with me on that aswell. Now that being said, 2bad4u2 is exactly correct. I know a lot of 700P and 700LTR owners that have had the HS stocks skim bedded for perfect fit, I am one of them. The McMillan A2 on the Savage, does it need to be bedded? No, just as the HS does not need to be bedded, but if you pillar bed the McMillan it makes it better, but if you do not, well, the gun is still a tack driver as are the HS stocked rifles.

I was interested in your experience with the McMillan. I didn't want your experience per se, only why you thought the MacMillan was better. I too am in the market for a 10FP or LTR in .308. Either in HS or McMillan Stock.

Is is strictly the feel of the stock, or is there more to it ?
 
To be perfectly honest, I do not really like either the A2 or the HS on the Savage, not a pistol grip style stock fan, that is why I ordered a McMillan A1/GPH stock for my new LTR. I do not even like the LTR stock either, that is why I am selling it before I even use it and getting the A1 stock. Bottom line you cannot go wrong with any of them, they are all great quality. You have to get what feels best for you, and for me it is an A1.
