Savage 10FP Real Review

I bought a Model 10 FCP McMillan and My buddy bought the Model 10 FCP HS Precision.

Same rifle different stocks. Both were bedded into the stocks by Rick @ Alberta Tactical.

My buddy was able to get setup to reload quick and went from shooting 2-4 inch groups with federal power shock ammo to shooting sub 1 inch groups with his hand loads.

I am shooting 155gr Lapua ammo due to time constraints( no time to develop a load before the Alberta Long Range Challenge). I am not sure what I am shooting for groups @ 100 inches but when the wind cooperates banging gongs at 700 Meters is easy peasy.

My buddy is a new shooter and really likes his gun.

My only gripe is the Accutrigger. I prefer something lighter and will probably change it out for a Rifle Basix or something similar. I wish they were available with the Target accutrigger.

I hope this helps.

I too have the 10 FCP HS Precision and after dialing in a load of 178 gr A-Max I'm finally getting good results (bottom left) Shot from 100 M. Four shots, bottom 3 with no turret changes and the last (top) with 2 clicks up. Haven't put my caliper on it but I'll bet it's under 1 MOA

I have a 10FCP with the McMillan stock. I have added a Karstein cheek piece and a Holland muzzle brake. I have developed two loads that both shoot very, very well. 168 hornady amax and 155 lapua sceenars both under Varget and Win WLR primers. This was the first Savage I have ever owned, I was always stuck on Remys but these things shoot and are one heck of a nice rifle to boot. Don't be afraid to buy one, it will be money well spent. X2 on the acutrigger Blygy they take some getting used to for sure.

If you like it, buy it. There is no substantial difference in accuracy between any factory rifles as a whole.

Maybe try the black rifles forum too.

I will always say yes to anything on the Savage 110 action. Best value rifles on the market. If you want to build a race gun, well get a better action, if you are on a budget and want the best your few dollars can buy, Savage every time.

I am right. Everyone else is wrong. ;)

Mine is 26" McMillan, shoots on average 0.75 MOA with 178 Amax or 180 Sierra MK. 168 SMK was fine too but I think heavier bullets are better for this twist. It's my second Savage in 308, solid shooter. I tried Port milsurp for fun, was not bad at all - 1.5 MOA or so.

I have the LE2B version (26" barrel and McMillan stock). The first load of Varget and 168 AMaxs shot under 1/2" at 100 yards and is consistently under 3/4" at 100. No reason to change.

FWIW it hated 168 SMK Federal GMM with a passion though I've heard people talk about having good results with it so it may be an anomaly. I've come into some more of it to try out so we'll see how that works out. If you see me selling boxes of GMM on the EE, the rifle didn't like it.

All factory savage/stevens are blessed with a heavy and somewhat clunky bolt lift. Good news is that easily corrected - AKA bolt timing. I can now offer that service.

The accutrigger is one of the nicest triggers I have used and I have used many custom triggers. Down to 1.5 to 2lbs, it does a superb job and offers an added safety advantage. I think of it as a two stage trigger as you will need to 'take up' the safety tab. Nice thing about that is it preloads the pressure on the trigger making it seem to break way lighter then it actually does.

The new center feed mag is a gem. The mags are solid, the feeding is smooth plus you get an very long internal mag dimension allowing for all sorts of fun.

The factory barrels are some of the most accurate you can get. sub MOA seems to be the norm and it is not a stretch to see a true 1/2 min pipe. They will all foul to different degrees but they seem to shoot great even with some copper.

One thing that most of these barrels share is 'walking' as they get hot. Pretty much the norm with any non stressed relieved barrel. Some are worse then others.

Beyond the metal parts, the stock is whatever floats your boat. They all need to be properly bedded no matter who made the stock.

For the money, there is precisious little out there that even comes close. Then there is all that you can modify and change as you see fit.

How good are these actions? I have built over a dozen rifles and done nothing to any of the action except the bolt timing. With a quality barrel, they will shoot as good as any tuned or custom Rem style action.

I have the 10 FLP (Lefty version of the 10 FP).

I put on a Bushnell 10X40 3200 series scope and a Harris swivel bipod. TPS 0 moa base and Burris rings. No other mods. Accutrigger is sweet !!

My load is Winchester brass, CCI BR2 primers, 42 grains of Varget topped by a Hornady 178 gr A-Max.

My best group to date (5 shots, 100 yds) is 0.330" with most being around 0.75".

I never could get the 168 gr A-Max to shoot well, best group was 0.945".

You won't regret buying a Savage.

I have a 10FP. I have changed the stock for a Bell and Carlson with aluminium bedding. My load with 175 grain bullet works like magic. I shoot between 0.25 and 0.5 MOA. Lighter bullets gives average result because of its1 in 10" rate of twist. The variance is mostly the result of the shooter.

My best grouping: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38887457@N03/3574040339/

I love the rifle and I prefer it from the Remington because of its love of heavier bullets.

Avec respect,
