Hey guys, about 20 years ago I bought myself a Savage 10FP in .223 Rem. It was the standard 24" heavy barrel rifle with the black stock that had 2 sling swivel studs and the Accutrigger. I had it scoped with a nice Bushnell 4-12 power scope.
That rifle shot dimes at 200 yards and was by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I won an egg shoot with it at my local club once out to 300 yards and it was responsible for taking dozens of groundhogs at my uncle's farm. I very stupidly sold it to fund some other ridiculous project I'm sure, one of the great selling mistakes I've made.
What kills me tho is I think that rifle was $799 retail price brand new?!?! I don't think the firearms market has seen a deal like that in decades for such a nice, accurate rifle?
I want to find something to replace it with and I also want to shoot .308 Win this time. I'd like to build a budget M40 type rifle to practice out to 300 yards and I couldn't think of anything more capable than a Savage 10FP. Sadly they have discontinued that rifle and replaced it with God knows what these new Core rifles are?
Are the days of getting a $799 Savage 10FP over? These newer Savage Axis and Ruger American rifles don't really appeal to me because I just think of them as the companies budget line. I think Savage poured alot of thought into the 10FP and held it as one of their top quality lines?
Anyways does anybody have any suggestions for a good .308 Win, 24" heavy barrel rifle with polymer stock? I am looking to build something that resembles a Remington 700 M40 or a Rem 700 Police but those are going to be $2500. Thanks
