Hey all Gun Nutz,

I am looking for a good all around gun with out going all out and spending all I'm worth or cheeping out I have two rifles in mind! if you think of something else let me know and if you have shoot either of these that would help.

I'm looking at either the Savage 11/111 FCXP3 or the Tikka T3 Light they are both Bolt Action guns and am looking at both guns in .270 for an all around Hunting in moose and coyote something for everything.

Any opinions/help thanks,
Marshall

Both are nice lots of people have em so I got a model 70 sporter in 270wsm and it shoots great even with plain jane superx 150 grainers..All my hunt camp buddys wanna shoot it!!

People who think that Tikka rifles are the be all end all, obviously have not tried other brands, whatever thet may be.I used to think the same way, until I tried other brands.Your going down the same old, same old, tired road....

The Tikka is by all accounts a well-designed and well-made rifle that works very well and is good value for money. Few people report having one and not liking it.

But I'd get the Savage instead because it also has a good reputation and my mother was Scottish. The price difference would probably pay for a worthwhile upgrade the scope that comes in the package - e.g. a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Redfield Revolution.

But you should try to at least handle an example of each to see how they feel. If a gun fits you well you are more likely to shoot it to its accuracy potential than one that doesn't fit you.

Tikka question ( No Hi-Jak intended). I have a Tikka T3 Lite/blued in 6.5x55, I love it!!
What a smartly manufactured rifle. Anyways, I took it all apart and put it back together when I 1st got it, then I did it again for cleaning. Before I never noticed the free floating bbl until the 2nd re-assembly, then I took it apart again on the wknd, re-assembled and the bbl fit right up against the forestock= zero free float, ?? The action screws fit snug like normal. I took it apart once more and carefully lined everything up and now it free floats again....I noticed that there is a "good" gap between bbl & forestock..should it be like this? I read on the Tikka website that it has a floating bbl....jus curious if theres something I missed?
Like I said, didnt mean to hi-jak, IMO the Savage has a nice trigger and priced affordably, barrels are easy to switch and accurate to boot. For me, they dont come in 6.5x55.

I bought a Savage 111fcxp3 in 30-06 and couldn't be happier with it. It was $481.00 out the door and shoots 1 inch at 100yrds. I have been working up loads for it as well.
There is certainly nothing fancy about the rifle but it works.

I put a new Redfield on it for $200. Great rifle for the price.

The last Ruger Hawkeye I had was a 270. Good choice, you will like it.

You've double posted this thread, so I'll give you the same reply..

I have the Savage 111fcxp3 in 30-06, It shoots also around 1inch at 100m and 3 inches at 200m that is with handloads (does similar with factory ammo), but 180gr hunting ballistic tip which aren't the most accurate bullets made, but very accurate in terms of hunting bullets. The only thing I would recommend is to upgrade the scope if it comes with combo package, and buy better rings.

The tikka I have not shot, but have seen it perform and read much of it on the forums. It will shoot as accurate as the savage, but the build quality is better as well as visual aesthetics. This is where the extra money comes in. Out of a rating of 100 comparing the two rifles, this is how I would rate them.

Accuracy:
Tikka-100
Savage-95

Quality:
Tikka-100
Savage-80

Appearance:
Tikka-100
Savage-50

Price:
Tikka-50
Savage-100

No insults intended, i affirm these things because over the year i bought a least one of each ( i have 31 rifles ) so he asked between those two, i felt the Tikka had the edge but if i had only one to chose between the one i owned, it would be my Steyr Scout 308... Cheers. JP.

And the story could change because i am awaiting my TC Icon Wheatershield 308 that could a real runner up in the race for my favorite... JP.

Savage rifles are great shooters....just a fugly sloppy action IMO compared to the Tikka T3's. I have a couple buddies that shoot Sako m75 and Tikka T3 rifles like myself but have a Savage Predator or the Edge XP models in22-250 and 243.....awesome shooters for the $$$$.

My two Tikka T3's are in the laminate stainless model...I waited the extra year just for it...I do not care for the T3 syntheic stock-too hollow sounding for me....not like a Sako m75 synthetic stock thats for sure.

The Savage is a pretty ugly, but utilitarian gun that generally shoots well. The T3 is a largely plastic gun with plastic parts that for all its smoothness I'll never be able to like, it also generally shoots well. For your money, a new Model 70 is many times more gun than either of these options, and something you'll actually be proud to own in twenty years.

Out of the box the Tikka will outshoot the Savage but mostly because of the trigger. The Savage is thought to beat for money..you could start out with it and upgrade the trigger and stock later if you wish. There isn't much in the way of upgrades for the Tikka.

I have the Savage 11/111fcxp3 in 243 Win and it shoots great, I know Zokakoka said his shoots 3" groups at 200 meters and I guess it could be because mines a smaller caliber and less recoil but I've shot tighter groups at 200 yards with mine, not saying anything about either of our shooting abilities but at 200 yards with 87 grain Hornady Match hand-loads I'm shooting 1" and smaller groups (granted that's off a bench with a sandbag for support), so all I'm saying before I get into trouble with Zokakoka is I wouldn't turn away from the Savage and and you'll save a few bucks in the bargain, I have a couple Savage rifles and I'd put them up against any other more expensive hunting rifle as far as accuracy and quality. And who said Savage is ugly, that's not nice at all, I love my Savage, they're so pretty, I'm never ashamed to say they're with me!!!!! Anyway good luck with whatever you choose.

Hehe no fence taken. I've only shot it once at 200m on a windy day and had no bipod nor sandbags. Just a flimsy block of wood and hunting ballistic tips, which aren't the most accurate bullets other there. I'm sure they can shoot MOA or very possibly sub-moa right out to 300-400yards no problem under the right circumstances and preparations. For the dollar you can't do much better! And yes I too like the look of the savage stock, well let's face it, it's our baby :)

Go with the savage. With the money you save you can put it towards a new scope. The triggers aren't bad if you work on them (or gunsmith---be safe). Sometimes the barrels touch the stock where they aren't supposed too. Nothing a little sandpaper can't fix. They are really accurate rifles for the money.
