OK, I know it is not a Precision rifle. I posted in the Hunting/Sporting Arms forum as well to get some info. and thought someone in this forum could offer some opinions too. (Mystic?)
I'm looking at the above, in .308 (Savage # 19842 - synthetic stock, detach. mag., accutrigger), and I'm wondering if it's a decent rifle to start out target shooting with (100-200 yards); maybe later on, in a couple of years, build it up to do longer range shooting.
Any pros/cons or deficiencies to this rifle?
I've also seen the Model 11 Hunter XP as well, and from Savages site it looks like the receiver is a bit different and I don't know why unless it has something to do with the Accutrigger. And yes I know that the package scope is likely to be junk.
Thanks for the help.

I recently bought this in .223 but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. fyi, it has the smooth barrel nut and bottom bolt release.

My thoughts on the stock quality are....well.....other models (for more $$$) have the "accustock". This model has the "crapustock". Flimsy thing. I was planning on building my own stock before I bought this rifle and that plan is definitely still in place. :)

[edit: remember that I haven't actually shot this particular rifle yet so the opinions I have on this stock are just from my observations. Maybe it'll shoot like a dream? :) ]

For today's Boxing Day price, I think it's a really good deal with the accutrigger. I paid more.

I bought the same rifle but in 243. I think it shoots really well ,especially for what it is. I spent maybe 30$ on some jb weld and a couple pieces of steel rod to reinforce the front of the stock and do a bedding job on it. With my handloads it will shoot right around 1/2 moa +or- a little. I am very happy with mine.

Smooth barrel nut won't matter. You will just need a smooth barrel nut wrench as opposed to the notched version. Mine also has the front release mag. It is my only real complaint about the gun. It works fine, but the catch is on the mag and its plastic. If your new stock used the factory bottom plastic (its not metal) the factory mag should still work I think.
The other thing, my gun came with the weaver scope as opposed to the bushnell that is on some. I am very impressed with the glass in it for being a 120$ scope. The eye relief is really long and I don't find I have to fight at all to get a good sight picture. Side by side with my brothers bushnell tactical 10x the weaver scope is much brighter, the colors are better and the picture is more crisp, atleast to me. The 120$ cheapo scope makes me want to try a high end weaver, if I think the glass in the cheap scope is decent, I want to try a good one.

Update: I called WSS earlier today and they told me that many of their sale prices on Savage package rifles and the Stevens rifle were posted INCORRECTLY on their web site on Boxing day and everyone that ordered one on line will be getting a call about a "Price adjustmant" to reflect the "corrected" price. WTF? Can they do that? What a buch of JACKASSES !

That's been SOP with WSS.

Ya they had the 111 long range hunter in 338 lapua for 810, it was normally 1050, now it's listed for 1150...

I do have a Savage Model 11 International Trophy Hunter XP in .223 Remington and I have to say its a complete and total joy to shoot and a 1000 time more
accurate than I am. When I first started looking around at the different rifles available for what I wanted and had the money for, at the time this rifle was last
on my long list of bolt actions that I wanted to get, the real decider was the price and the fact that the gun store I was at actually had it in stock, unlike
every other rifle I had on my list. I was real excited and with the power of a new gun boner, and not using my brain, I went to my work place a bought 10 boxes of
Winchester White Box 55 Grain FMJ .223 rounds, I had just bought a rifle, and now 200 rounds!!!! If I had a wife, she'd kill me...;). I then raced off to the shooting
range. I got there just as my best friend did, wow what a coincidence:rolleyes:, after I got set up, I sighted it in with the help of my friend who indecently had brought his
spotting scope for some reason. It ran like a dream, can't say my shooting skills were though. I have never had more fun that 3,4,5 hours at the range with it.

The plastic stock is nice, not exactly a target shooting style, but is nice and light, has a little flex at the front. Also the trigger guard is plastic, I recommend replacing
with a metal one, you can easily order one from Savage, one of the many fine and excellent dealers that sponsor this site. Or if your feeling adventurous Brownells
has them and will ship them to Canada or you could try Boyd's Gunstock Industries, they have them as well, you can get very nice laminate hard wood stocks from
Boyd's as well.

You'll have to excuse my fur coat:p its rather cold and I haven't turned the thermos on, I put a Remington shell holder and a little foam padding underneath it to raise
the cheek up, now its just right and comfortable.:D

I added a Shooters 9" - 13" bi-pod from good old Canadian Tire.

The detachable magazine is listed as a 4 round mag but I discovered that you can cram a extra round in it and it will feed just fine,
not sure if this will work in .308 Win, the magazine spring at first is a little stiff, will loosen up over time.

It comes withe a Weaver Kaspa 3-9x40mm scope with medium height weaver rings. The rings look really cheap, but the work. The bolt is jeweled, has nice smooth
operating and shiny too. This model comes with the Accutrigger, It is easy to adjust, has a nice crisp feel to the break, Although I am no expert in the field of glass braking,
I have broken my far share of glass cups and plates and bowels and....

The bolt knob is checkered, not really a over sized tactical bolt knob, but gives a nice positive grip when wearing gloves.

Here is a picture of it at the range, prone, it's hard to see but straight out is a large piece of brown cardboard sitting at 200 yards, well just above it is a steel ram target,
painted a lovely shade of white. I fired 40 shots while prone, hit it 37 time, the three were because it was my first time shooting prone.

And this lovely dark photo happened just as the lights went out, the lights at the range are on a twist timer, it only goes for 2 hours, and we had long forgotten about it.
In my honest opinion, It's not the best starting choice, you could get a Stevens 200 or Savage Axis, Ruger American, Remington 700 SPS, Tikka T3, Weatherby Vanguard Sporter,
the list just goes on and on, but if you want a Savage rifle with the Accutrigger the Model 11 International Trophy Hunter XP is a good choice, others would be Model 111/11 Hog
Hunter, Model 10 Precision Carbine. On a random side note I think the Savage Model 111/11 Hog Hunter in .308 Win would make a excellent scout rifle, too bad its not magazine fed.

P.S. I did buy mine from Wholesale Sports, but I bought it in the beginning of November.

The last time I was at Wholesale Sports the guy working the counter complained about how crappy their websites is, He told me that they have had nothing but problems with it. He advised me that if there is anything on the website that's strange, here's a perfect example is a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter DBM on sale, being listed in .45 Long Colt!!!!! to call the closets store, man talk about a messed up website, there are error everywhere on their site. How do they miss this, do they not check there site???

Here's a link: http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/firearms/bolt-action-rifles/vanguard-sporter-dbm/prod279080.html

I got the Hunter XP in .243 as I don't really like the AccuTrigger. I put a RifleBasix trigger in it and it is perfect. I also stiffened the forend with 2 6mm carbon fibre tubes, JB Weld bedded it, shortened the LOP and installed a GTF Limbsaver pad, re-headspaced it to match my dies, oversize bolt knob and added an adjustable cheekpiece as it will eventually get my 4-15x50 Elite 4200. Oh yeah, I repainted it with bedliner. It was a good shooter out of the box but it is a really good shooter now. None of the work I did had to be done to make it a good shooter but I am a tinkerer at heart and I wanted it to be a great shooter. They are a great starting place for anyone wanting to build up a precision rifle. Wanstall is where I got mine. I will not deal with WSS anymore.

I have one in .223
1 MOA with the $10/20rd American Eagle 55g.
0.75 MOA with $2x/20rd Hornady Superformance 55g & 75g.
Soilid performance especially when you include the $500+- price point into consideration.
I don't have reloading press so I don't have data for handloads.

and the package scope isn't that bad.
I believe the "trophy hunter XP" weaver scope is actually a Nikon Prostaff.
The "hunter XP" scope is another story tho.

As listed on Savage's website, the Savage Model 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP with the 3-9x40mm Nikon Prostaff scope is only available in the United States, the Model 11/111 International Hunter XP is the one that is available outside of the US, it has a 3-9x40mm Weaver Kaspa scope.
