Savage 110 percision questions

As Potashminer posted above, 9.3 x 62 is now my big rifle. Why? No reason what so ever, other than wanting something else to shoot and load for.

Who does not think about being able to deliver a big payload accurately at what is for most of us, impossible ranges. At the distances where I can shoot, my 6.5 x 55 SE is more than up to the task. Likewise, at those available distances, the 9.3 works just fine. That rifle, a Husqvarna, with the scope weighs in at 8 lbs, that along with the felt recoil amplifying dropped comb tailored for irons felt recoin can be somewhat intense. So, with the factory butt plate, two rounds down the pipe is almost enough; 4 is all I could manage. With a slip-on limbsaver recoil pad, as well as one I wear, I can get through 20 rounds. It hurts so good!

Corey07fraser If you want a .338, get one. Recoil wise, the 9.3 is all the recoil I want. Based on charts, "free" recoil on the 9.3 and 300 Win Mag are about the same; .338 is about 25% more. (30 vs. 38 Ft-Lbs).

I think the cost of ammo quoted in this thread might be a bit "light", even hand loading is not as economical as it once was. I am still using powder I have had in stock since pre-covid. I should have bought about 50 5 lb jugs when it was available. Same goes for primers. I did a calculation based on current market values of components, and I think I could reload for between 4 and 5 bucks a round for the 9.3, and a buck or two less depending the the bullets etc in the 6.5.

Another point that some mentioned was for practice, a good .22 LR shooting at 100-200 is a great way to train, and for me, it grew to be my primary form of rifle shooting. I ended up spending more on my CZ455 Super Match, than I intended, but have no regrets; I put literally thousands and thousands of rounds through it as well as the other .22s I have for ranges out to 50.

Photos, loaded 9.3 beside loaded 6.5; 9.3 Husky Rifle; 6.5 Zastava; and my .22 Bench Rifle. Again, all are capable at the range distances which I have available.

Have fun!!

Hello all. I am planning on purchasing a savage 110 precision rifle, chambered in 338 lapua, in the near future.
I am working on researching further details....in the meantime time. My question to you guys is, what all will I need to buy in order to swap barrels? My hope is to purchase a barrel chamber in 300 win mag.
From what I have gathered so far is, along with the barrel I will need a different bolt and magazine obviously. I understand both the rounds are long action so hopefully thats all I need? Thanks in advance.
Also open to alternative options but my budget has to stay closer to 2-3k (bare gun).
From what you've described... I would just go straight to purchase a nice 300PRC. One & done!

Try and find out what 338LM ammo cost before embarking on this.

Its expensive I know. So far ive found some at 5$ per cartridge retail. Oddly enough not much available for bulk. Ill end up paying 4x the cost of the gun in ammo lol.
But....who says money cant buy happiness, am I right?

Me and Mr Visa and my laptop dancers agree, YES money can buy lots of toys and ‘happy endings’. The secret to enjoying life is to do it while you’re living.

I'm trying to figure out where I fit in the groove?

My target style rifles are .338 Lapua, .303, 7.5 Swiss, .308, 6.5 Creed, .223, .22LR

I used to compete years ago, now it's only for pure enjoyment.

My hunting rifles are .500 Jeffery, 458 Lott, 45-70, .44 Rem Mag, .416 Rigby, 9.3 x 62, .375 H&H, .35 Whelen, 8mm Mauser, .303, 7.62x39, 30-06, .308, .300 Blackout, 7x57, 7mm 08, .270, 6.5x55, 22-250, .223, 22LR and (.177pellet  )

Yes, I reload for them all (except .22LR) - (including bullet casting for hunting rifles - I stop at .30 caliber)

Moral of my story;

Some, I shoot more than others, but I enjoy every last one of them and I have seriously been doing this including reloading and casting for well over 50 years.✌️

The ballistics of a 338 Lapua Magnum are pretty sweet. Super capable cartridge... pretty lazer beamy out to probably 1000. Roughly speaking where it really shines over a lighter cartridge is 1000+, the bullet only then starts drifting the way a lighter cartridge starts to drift starting at around 500. Then, when the 300gr pill gets to 1500, it is still lethal and isnt just a mouse fart.

Though it doesnt mean much if the guy behind the trigger cant shoot it without flinching. An involuntary flinch because your mind is anticipating pain is pretty hard to overcome. An involuntary flinch due to inexperience can be fixed with practice. In that case a lighter cartridge shot with no flinch and a dope chart will spank a 338 Lapua.

Make it heavy,(im thinking 20+ lbs), put a good brake on it... be super comfortable behind the trigger... if you cant touch the trigger off and keep your eyes open through the scope, its too much cartridge for the skill or comfort level.

Allegedly the factory Savage precision brakes suck. Plan to research and spend good money on a brake that will actually brake the rifle and not just make noise.

Hand loads for a 338 Lapua Magnum are roughly:
$2 a bullet
90 grains of powder(roughly $1 per load)
.15 cents a primer
Brass is $5 a piece for new brass.
