Savage 110 refinish and new barrel project

I am re-barreling a Savage 110 from .243 to a new Savage .250 barrel that I purchased from Jerry at Mystic Precision. Also decided to refinish the stock while I was at it. The stock has presented some challenges as you can see in the pictures but so far I like how it is looking. I am going to finish the stock as it appears in the last picture, with the main wood light and the checkering dark.
The first pic shows some of the damage to the wood.
The second pic is the rifle as it appeared at the start.
The third picture is after the Circa 1850 remover and part way through sanding at 100 grit.
The last picture is finished with the 100 grit and waiting to be whiskered and then 220 grit.

I am hoping for the final finish to have the checkering dark and the remaining wood as light as I can keep it.

why not make this one a 25-06, all you need is the barrel chambered. The action is long enough and it has the correct bolt face.

Any cartridge you want in that action. .25-06 would perfect.

Okay, I am a bit lost here. I have always understood that the 308 Family included 243, 07-08, 260 Rem, 338 etc and that the 308 was shorter length than the 30-06 family from which the 25-06 descends.

My understanding is that the 308 uses a short action and that the 30-06 uses a long action.

My info indicates:
308Win .473" 2.8"
30-'06Springfield .473" 3.34"

So while the bolt face may work the length would be short. I see no reason why it won't work?

250Sav .472" 2.4" Bolt face should work and the length is a bit long by .4"

I already have the 250 Savage barrel and intend to install it. When I get to my 25-06 project my plan was to find a 30-06 donor rifle. C 250 Savage.jpg

I do not think Savage made "short" or "long", back in the day - if your rifle is a Model 110, it is long - the magazine might have a blocking section in it, and your bolt stop may be of a size for the shorter rounds. I had a Savage 112V single shot - in 22-250 - easily long enough of 30-06 - might have even taken 300 Weatherby, but I did not own one at the time... I think the Savage Models with 2 digits - 10, 11, etc. were for 308 family length; the 3 digit models - 110, 112, etc. are for at least 30-06 length, maybe even longer.

This is correct. The older Savage 1XX are all long actions, I've seen older savage 110 in 243 its still a long action.

The newer savages that are shorter actions are all model 10, 11, 12, 16 and the long actions are 110, 111, 112, 116.

They did make what they called a medium action early on in the 110's history. Didn't last long and they never made a lot of them. In the last 50 some years I've had my hands on only one. - dan
 
Sounds like Dan is correct - just read the same on Wikipedia about Savage 110 - there was a "short action" 110 starting 1959 -243 and 308. In 1998 was when products re-engineered and re-named, the short actions became two numbered. Not clear how long the "short action" 110 was produced.
 
I've seen a medium action in .308. Mostly 110 are long actions. The one pictured is near the length of that scope tube...
 
Series J are the medium action Savages. This is a 1976 112 series J single shot varmint rifle that was a 22/250. I refinished it, rks rebored it to a 6.5, Rempel chambered it in 6.5/284.

The following measurements depict the various screw spacing on Savage 110 centerfire actions over the years. All measurements are center-to-center.

All Long Actions = 5.062" (1958 to present, staggered and center-feed magazines)
1st. Gen Short Actions = 4.522" (1959 to 1987, staggered feed magazine)
2nd Gen Short Actions = 4.275" (1998 to 2007, staggered feed magazine)
3rd Gen Short Actions = 4.400" (2005 and up, center-feed magazine, not in photo)
3rd Gen Palma/Dual-Port = 3.440" (2009 and up, single-shot only)
Axis/Edge = 4.800" (2008-present; spacing same for long or short action cartridges)
