Savage 110FCP HS .338LM Modifications

Man, there sure are some big attitudes on this forum....

Unless someone is suggesting something unsafe, why the need for the sass? There are a million way to skin a cat, respect them, and learn from them, whether that be what to do, or what NOT to do.

And since when is 20 pounds heavy? That should be no problem to haul around inside a drag bag with backpack straps or something like a eberlestock gunslinger.
not a problem at all, but unnecessary weight in a 338 Lapua imo, As I said, the 50 BMG I shoot weighs that but the increase in performance comes with that price of weight. If there were lighter more portable options without sacrificing quality I would go that route

I have a 338 on the EE for that exact reason, It was bought when there were no lighter and more compact options.

Hey man. If you want your 338 to be 80lbs, and if you want to change everything on it then you go for it! ###ual preference man, and if they dont like it, f#ck em!

285 grain bthp and 93 grains of retumble cci mag primer, I was using federal match but switched in the rem700 2800fps in the savage I backed down to 92gr and didn't have a chance to chrono but the savage chamber was diffenitly tighter can't stress it enough use lapua brass. These are warm loads but I chrono some factory hornady and they were zipping around that speed too. I find the muzzle blast almost as bad as the recoil and 50 rounds is a lot out of one of these.

Thx, I'll try that!! What brand where the 285's??

I have bought 100 fresh lapua brass, and they'll be annealed frequently.

Do you have an FCP/BA/LRH??

Thx. Appreciate the data.

I did Hava a fcp but I kept my xcr rem, hornady bullets both amax and bthp shot well, I bump my shoulders with a rcbs full length die the loads are full bore and a neck die wasn't working for me. I am waiting for a used custom single shot coming in the mail I hope it shoots better than the rem it was twice as much, it's coming with wilson dies looking forward to trying those out.

OP, if your concerned about recoil shoot 250's instead of 300's, there is a noticeable difference. :)

Very nice!!

I have some Berger .300's, but I'll as if I can find some a-max's.

I just got a headspace gauge, so I'll be trying the bump back method too. I'm waiting on my Competition S full length dies so I can get playing!!!

Do you find that the retumbo is "dirty"??? I've heard this rumor. Cleaning my gun doesn't scare me, just asking.

There is rarely any upside to recoil in precision LR shooting. I want as little as possible and build stuff to make it so.

Plus, I really enjoy watching my own impacts. Hard to do when the rifle has jarred you off target. A good designed bipod or pedestal rest coupled with good rear bag will help here alot.

The 338LM and 300gr bullets DO KICK. Even in a muzzle braked rifle. How much that affects you? Can't say but I don't want any or as little as possible. Easier to drive 1/4 min groups when you aren't fighting the rifle and for me, LR precision is all about the hitting, not the boom or the kick.

From all the 338 shooting that I have helped with, you will quickly find the Hrn 285gr family of bullets wonderful but the 300gr Bergers are simply much better WAY the heck out there. The real world BC between these bullets is surprising.

If the goal is breaking something, then the heavier jackets on the HRN is way better vs the Berger.

All sorts of supplies available if interested. Do check the neck clearance vs the chamber... you might find outside neck turning give very positive results.

If you are going to anneal, do it properly. You can create far more problems with incorrect annealing vs just tossing the case. It is very hard to it properly by hand

Enjoy...

Thx Jerry - appreciate the advice.

I have an annealer from Ballistic Edge, and some tempilaq, and many hours of reading behind me. I shouldn't ####-it-up too bad....

We have ammassed a whole pile of 300's, so we're gonna work that load up and see what we can do.

I don't know how to neck turn yet - I have to sit and learn about it. I did get a headspace gauge from Larry Willis. I'm excited to try it out vs. the "sharpie on the bullet" method.

Agree with you fully on the recoil. I've done enough things in my life to prove my bravado, I'm done, thank you very much!!!

I may be calling you for at least one Boyd's stock. I have a T3 Varmint in .300WSM en route, and I'd love to customize the stock to fit me. Boyd's are such great value. I'd do the pro varmint, custom LOP, bed it, and then add weight again (despite my self-esteem issues secondary to my "sensitivity").

I love the retumble don't find it dirty I had tried h1000 but ran into pressure signs early, Jerry do you sell a annealing machine I have been doing it by drill and torch I know that is not the best but my brass was getting to hard and I had to start anealing I have been using the same brass for quite awhile should have kept better track but over 10 firings and still going strong.

I want to correct something before someone brings it up. The thing from Willis is a headspace "comparator", not gauge......that should save some comments, and me mouthing off in reverse.

For my annealer, I can't say anything but good things about Phil Keil at Ballistic Edge. I wonder if he needs a CDN distributor (Jerry????, hmmmm???) ??? You can choose as many cartridge sizes as you'd like, and mine was shipped in about 4 days.

Giraud absolutely refuses to speak to Canadians.....anyone who isn't interested in our money gets ZERO of my business.

Giraud is controlled by ITAR (US govt) rules... he cannot export to us!!!

Reviewed the ballistic Edge system.. works very well IF the system timer has been improved. Or at least given a good time to warm up and stabilise.

I can offer and use the Bench Source annealer. Pricey and works superbly. This is one of the very few we can access in Canada that allows the user to control both temp and dwell in very small increments.

Found a very nice vid to illustrate this point.

The difference between good and not so good in this example is a whopping 0.7secs - why I do not recommend annealing by hand. We simply aren't that precise and why I made the investment in this annealer.

PM or email for a quote... it is not cheap but does a superb job and given the cost of shooting, how much you can process, and the LR results... a worthwhile investment.

Outside neck turning is very important especially if you are using a bushing neck die... lumpy on the outside, pushes into the inside... bad for runout and neck tension.

Everyone has their own version of ITAR, and his version is very unhelpful.

There are hundreds of thousands of ITAR items that CDN dealers can easily access, and his website makes it crystal clear that if you're Canadian, don't bother calling.

Phil isn't like that, at all.

I haven't used my annealer yet, so I can't and won't speak on how it works. I would rather not have two open flames in my gun room (ie i'd rather have induction), but the cost of the others was prohibitive.

Far more US products not accessible cause the US manf has little interest in going through the steps to set up for export. The majority of the US production is out of bounds to Canadians.... at least legally.

Just because some company ships doesn't mean the goods is legally exported.

We tend to see the major, main stream brands (even when sometimes we shouldn't). There are dozens of mom and pops making really cool stuff that have no interest outside the US. And that number is going to surge now that the US economy is back on its feet.

Giraud is simply tired of answering the same question as he has no interest in setting up for export. He was more then happy to do business with Canada until the door got slammed on his foot. His stuff IS in Canada and works very nicely.

Annealers in general are NOT under ITAR... at least they weren't the last time I checked.

US govt has gone after Giraud and would likely go after any machinery considered automated. Why? who knows but this is their game so we just play along.

But a progressive press is OK... You can't automate heating brass necks but you can the completion of the actual ammunition.

Do the math on that one??????

Anyways, enjoy your build and report back some shooting results

Makes sense Jerry.

I do take it as a slap in the face when they're not willing to try....

You're exactly right about the stupidity of what's allowed and what's not. I'm sure ISIS and Qaeda are annealing their brass....... Although it's no different than an AR being restricted, but a Tavor being OK.

Hah! Someone finally agrees! Same thing for pinned mags as we'll.
