Gooday all,

First off I don't own one, but Ive been eyeballing this gun for a while now wondering how it would fare as a long range machine in 300 win mag. Im just curious whether anyone out there has tried this particular rifle and in general how they shoot off the shelf with some good optics.

For all those who feel the need to say that I don't want a 300wm for long range because recoil is too heavy to be accurate, I thankyou for your input but my question is geared towards the rifle itself and if anyone has experience with one at LR.

thanks and here is the link to the firearm in question.

Never shot one but I've owned many Savage rifles. If its like any of the other law enforcement Savages I've owned it should be a very capable long range rig, it should shoot consistently around .5 to 1 moa with the right load. Of course bedding the rifle in the stock should also be done, even with the new AccuStock with the aluminum bedding, proper bedding should still be done. As for recoil, that muzzle break should make a big difference. The detachable mag system on the Savages is great, very smooth feeding and solid metal construction. If you want more capacity there's always the SSS extended mag kit and it wont break the bank. The accutrigger is also very nice, I love the triggers on all my Savages and have never had the urge to swap them out with an aftermarket one. Personally I wouldn't buy one of these new Savages as I'm always changing my barrels and trying new things, the new rifles with the accustock have a smooth barrel nut that wont fit a barrel wrench.....if anyone knows how to get these new barrel nuts off let me know. Hope that helps, I used to be a Remington 700 man but ever since trying my first Savage I've never looked back!

As for the savage reputation i agree and this is why i am considering this rifle... I have a plain jane model 11 savage .243 that i bought last year for $450. The sucker shoots 1/2 moa at 100yrds..pretty much minute of popcan at 300... Im also thinking with the brake it might be similar to a 9lb 30-06?

thanks for the advice mlebler

That would make a superb LR hunting/plinking rig. Have it bedded properly (I can help) and load up some 208gr Amax or 210gr Berger VLD's. With the right charge of Re25, H1000 or Retumbo, you should be able to get sub MOA accuracy as far as you want to shoot. Plenty of horsepower and these bullets work wonderfully at very long distances.

With a scope that has enough elevation, 1 mile is well within reason with the above bullets.

If you decide to get this rig, one thing you can do is make the exit holes in the brake as big as possible. The rear venting WILL work very well BUT the exit holes are way too small as they come from the factory. A very nice design that needs a bit of TLC.

Have fun...

Jerry

mlebler, I wonder if the reg action wrench can clamp onto the nut hard enough to spin off. Otherwise, there is the cutting wheel :)
