A friend of mine just bought a new savage 111 in 30.06. First shot failed to fire and from that point on it seems to randomly fail. We have tried four different boxes of ammo from three different manufacturers. I have an older model 111 in .270 and we switched bolts to see if that would make a difference. His bolt functioned flawlessly in my gun and my bolt didn't make a difference in his. It still continued to fail. Early on i noticed that the firing pin was not making good contact with the primers but again it functioned flawlessly in my gun. I'm at a loss here. He's gonna have to send the gun back I'm sure but I was wondering if anybody out there had any problems like this.

Thanks

It is a possibility that the new rifle has excess headspace, and the firing pin fails to strike the primer hard enough to get it to fire.
It should be checked by a gunsmith with a set of go - no go gauges.

It could be headspace or a number of other issues. I have had five new rifles with headspace issues right out of the box, so it is possible.

Remember that most of the economically priced rifles are massed assembled to save costs. There is bound to be flaws somewhere in the system. Most of these companies will replace the firearm at no cost to the consumer if brought back to the store. The inconvenience to you is time.
