Hey guys,
I was just looking through my SIR catalog and seen the Savage combo for 434.99 It has a simmons 3-9x40 scope on it and include rings and bases all set up to go.
I was wondering how good of quality the scope rings and bases are. I know that with some combo guns the scopes are usually garbage, but I can change that. Are the rings that come on these guns decent or should they be thown away too.

p.s. I was thinking of one in 30-06.

Savage 111 Package rifles...

+1

Handled one at my local shop today. They had one in .270 and one in .30-06. The .30-06 sold in the morning. Both were package rifles with the Simmons 3-9x40mm scopes. The rifles appear to have Weaver type bases installed. The rings looked like they were sturdy but aluminum.

I found the scope to be nice & brite. But if it were me I'd upgrade it to a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm and the rings to Burris steel "Z" rings.

On the rifle, I like the detachable mag feature on these package rifles. The mags appear to be all metal, too, which is nice. The mag retention system seems to be decently secure as well.

I don't think you can go wrong with an inital outlay of $424 [+ your taxes].

They are decent guns. I bought one used, less the scope. Replaced the bases too and put a decent scope on it. The basic gun and detachable mag are good, trigger needs some work or replacement, and the synthetic stock needs to be looked at to make sure that at a minimum, its not putting pressure on the barrel.

the cheap $420 combos dont come with the accutrigger - thats why they are so inexpensive.

i think that the entry level savage with accutrigger is around $150 more expensive.

the accutrigger is nice, but i dont think its worth that much more. some people actively hate it.
for a target rifle perhaps it is important, for a hunting rifle not so much. back out the trigger spring tensioning screw a bit to lighten the trigger (approx 6 ounces per half turn).

if you are looking for a 'package' deal rifle buy my tikka t3 w/ 3200 elite scope.

790$

Yep you better believe it! It's in 30-06sprg btw

If you don't care too much about having a detachable mag, get a Stevens 200 and toss the extra $100 you saved towards a better scope, rings, and maybe bases.

the scope and mounts on the Savage 111 fxp3 combos are indeed terrible

I would suggest spending another $100-200 and get yourself into a Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 SPS, Tikka T3, or Browning Abolt stalker (all in the $550-720 range)

swaped the scope out after 20rds (300WM) now has a bushnell 3200 on it

tried using the scope on my new 22-250, and its just too crappy for that, scope is sitting in the spare parts in now. 22-250 has a bushnell banner 4-12x I think its a banner, made in Korea
