savage 111 vs. stevens model 200

HI DNkosh, it is for all intensive purposes the same rifle with very minor differences.
The Stevens 200 is a non accutrigger savage 111 rifle with a slightly different color plastic stock, and the 200 had a blind magazing where the 111 pkg has a clip. They are/ would be an excellent rifle in 270 (win I assume).
I have a savage 114U in 270 (and have had the 111 you are looking at left hand in 300 win mag)
The stevens 200 is IMHO, the best bang for your buck on a rifle.
the reason I wouldnt choose the 111 is simply the scope.
for the price of a can of Krylon, a stevens rifle, and a 3-9 3200, or VX1, you've got yourself an excellent hunting rifle, and glass to match. And... the price is still comprible to the 11 package.
BTW, the old style savage triggers are fairly easy to adjust if you have experience with them. The accutrigger is better, but definately not something to hinge the deal on (unless its important to you)

Mechanically they should shoot identically, they are the same receiver and barrel but with more milled out to allow the detachable mag. The difference would be mainly in the quality of rings and optics you'd choose for the stevens.

I'm looking at gettting a .270 right now as well. It's already been said, but the only difference is the Savage has a slightly nicer stock and a detachable mag. I consider the scope, rings and bases to be worthless, but really like having a "clip", so I think I'm going to go for the Savage.

I have the 111 in 300 Win Mag synthetic camo stock.
The Accutrigger IS WORTH IT. It is so smooth!
I put the scope on an old .22 and intalled a better scope on it. Also added a Limbsaver recoil pad as a 300 kicks like a mule. It is an excellent firearm.
The Stevens line is the no frills division of Savage. Good rifles but no bells 'n whistles.

If you can save up for a stevens, save a little more for a decent scope. The Bushnell 3200 elite is a great choice. It does not take much for these rifles to shoot accurately.
Another option is the remington SPS, or the mossberg ATR, which of course would require saving up a few more pennies..

At first I was looking to get a Stevens 200 in 25 06 and after some sweet talking from the sales guy and finding out how long it could have take'in to order one in he recommended the next step up, a Remington 700 SPS in 270wsm, it cost me $499 at the time in stead of the $320 I was planning on, can't remember what I paided fersure for the scope, I think it some wheres around $250 for a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40.
So far I've been really pleased with this setup and it'll shoot better than me.
If in yer on a buget and saving up doesn't werk ask about layaway payments, every shop I've been to does it with so many dollars down and to paided off by a certain time.

I have shot 2 Sav 111 rifles, one is a 300 Win and one was a 7mm Rem Mag.The 7MM was a 1 in rifle with factory ammo, and the 300 was shot using Premium Factoryammo and shot a 5/8 group.The rings on the 7mm had to be changed because they would loosen up after every outing to the range.Other than that they are both great rifles forthe cost.Oh ya , they are both non accu triger models .

savage makes some good, accurate rifles but they arnt exactly pretty.
I had a 111FCNS in 270 and it was great. Didn't kick much, enjoyed the design.. action was pretty long though for a long action.
Definately worth it. They all shoot good and the customer service through savage is pretty good as well.
But with any gun you purchase that comes with a scope and rings... they all pretty much needs to be replaced with something better.
i'd recommend a 3200 like someone else has stated, or a banner if you need to go cheaper.
for just starting out though, break it in with the scope thats on it. hunting season is a lil while away so see what it shoots good with and then fine tune it when you can get a better scope.
