hello there, not sure which to buy..... I looking at getting either a Savage(111 combo) or the stevens 200 chambered in a 270 round, but am not sure which one to buy..... I have a leupold 4x12 scope already that will be mounted on the gun I end up buying, but which gun is better for the price...... SIR $400 for the Savage 111 combo or $309 for the stevens... the only difference I see from the guns is the drop out magazine that comes with the Savage 111..... If I am going to use my leupold scope anyway should I spend the extra $90 just for the drop out magazine or should I just buy the stevens? Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated....

Personally, I like a drop mag. They're REALLY nice to have if you happen to be getting in & out of vehicles a lot as you hunt (I often get dropped off at one point & picked up at another, walking downhill in the process). It's nice to just drop the mag, pop any chambered round & off you go. then pop it back in as you hop out. No mucking around loading & unloading an internal mag.

The beauty of the combo is if you pull the scope that came with the 111, it's easy nuf to re-mount it on another rifle. A .22 for example, or even pass it along in the EE.

I bought a Savage 111 in 7mm Rem Mag. The gun felt nice (tight, decent trigger, decent scope). My only problem was the rear scope mount was garbage on mine. I'm not saying this is a problem with all 111's, probably just mine. Overall, the gun shot very good out of the box, with decent (maybe 1", I never measured really, I'm more worried about 1-2 shots being in the kill zone than 5-shot groupings) groups. I really enjoy the fit and finish on this rifle for the money. I had to add a bipod and better sling, though (plus replaced the scope mounts).

Overall, I say the 111 is a good shooter out of the box, and well worth the money. The drop mag is nice, and the scope is pretty decent for the money. I like mine quite a bit.

I'm just gonna throw this out there, it may be out of your price range or not what you're looking for:

Weatherby Vanguard combo in .270 Win:

Features: Vanguard synthetic rifle • Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm • Riflescope with phase-coated optics and 1/4-minute click adjustments • Leupold Rifleman rings and bases • Uncle Mike's nylon sling • Plano PRO-MAX injection-moulded gun case • Each package is indivdually mounted and bore-sighted at the Weatherby Custom Shop.

Price: $679.95 at Wholesale. Just throwing it out there.

I bought the 111 combo (with Simmons 3-9x40 scope - I think the full package designation was the 111FCXP3) in .30-06 about a year ago. These are some of my thoughts on it:
I'm not sure if you have the option to get the Accutrigger on the 111 - if you do, it might be worth the extra coin. I didn't, and I kind of wish I had, because the factory trigger weight is kind of a beast.
I bought mine with a synthetic stock - this was a fine option for me - although it certainly does nothing to reduce the recoil. I imagine that the .270 w/ synthetic stock would also be pretty snappy.
Regarding the dropout mag.: it is a nice feature, but it's also a bit of a finicky design - you have to watch that it seats properly when you insert it. That is to say, it can lock into its receptacle, while not seating quite right, and as a result the bolt won't push the next round into the chamber.
The Savage action is by most accounts quite reliable, but in my opinion it feels a bit 'loose' compared, say, to a Remington 700.
Savages are typically also nicely accurate out of the box - mine was. It performed well on the range and in the field - I shot two whitetail with it last year - and it was easy to put my shots exactly where I wanted them.
Having said all that, my intention is not to dissuade you from purchasing a Savage of this particular model - I simply wish to make you aware of some of the idiosyncracies of this firearm. If I had to buy all over again, (or if I was in your position, having a scope on hand already,) I might end up going for a Remington 700 BDL, with a hinged floorplate. If you shop around, you should have no problem picking one up for around the $500 mark.
Good luck with your decision - I've never shot a Stevens, but I'm sure in the end you'll probably be quite pleased whichever route you go.

Regarding the availability of the Accutrigger on certain models - true - you cannot get it on the combo deal, but if you already have a scope, why would you want the combo deal? You can get certain variations of the 111 with the Accutrigger.

You need to decide whether the drop mag is worth it to you or not. I doubt you'll regret getting the drop mag, whereas you may regret not having it. Keep in mind that no one makes a drop in replacement stock for the drop mag gun. If you want to swap to a nicer stock some day you will have to make some simple mods to the new stock.

Savage 111fcxp3

Got the 111FCXP3 in .300 WIN MAG.took off the rings, bases and Simmons scope immediately. Wanted a light ,inexpensive rifle in .300 and its what i got. gave bases and rings away. mounted scope (where it belongs) on an old STEVENS .22 semi -auto. mounted a LEO VII with weaver bases and rings. VERY PLEASED. the STEVENS model 200 is simply an OLDER model SAVAGE(with the grey composite stock). and NO, the model 111FCXP3 does NOT come with the accu-triger. the 111 can, however be lightened to 3 pounds(lighter,if you wish) by removing the stock and adjusting it yourself. No, its not the rifle my rem ADL in'06 is or my 1964 model 70 featherweight (also .30-06)is,. but its a hell of a deal for UNDER $400 at S.I.R. p.s. my old SAVAGE/Lee Enfield has the ORIGINAL 2 stage trigger and i (I M H O) its not that great. each to his own. and yes, the scope /bases and rings DID cost more than the 111 fcxp3- so what,. i knew what i wanted and spent my CASH well. I'm off to THASIS and GOLD RIVER for a SPRING BEAR HUNT, JIM and GUY SHOCKY, look out. POPS:dancingbanana::shotgun:

Personally, I do not like the Accutrigger and avoid it.
If you want a clip, definately get the package, sell the scope for 40? and throw the rings & bases in the garbage.
Pick up 2 weaver bases #46M [matte] and Burris posi align signiture Zee rings. Don't forget your sling.

FYI, the Savage Long Action is long between the scope bases and requires a long bodied scope. 5.9" approx with the weaver #46's and burris rings w/inserts. The action with those bases is just under 5.2" between base crossbolt slots and the insert is .702"

Cheers

PEI ROB hit the nail on the head. If you go the combo, get rid of the scope and put either a Burris or Leupold on it. You'll have one of the best rated shooting iron in its price range at a very reasonable price.
By the way, bot Savage and the Stevens are about equal in quality so it's like comparing apples with apples.
Good luck

so from what I am reading both models will do the job with my leupold 4x12 scope mounted on it..... If I understand correctly it just boiles down to whether or not I want to spend the extra cash for the drop out magazine is this correct?

Here's my former package gun. Changed bases to Ken Farrel one piece base, rings are Burris Signature Zees, Scope is Leupold VII 3-9x40 and trigger is from Sharp Shooter Supply. The stock is from Boyds and the mag is no longer a drop out. I think these are great guns and worth spending the money on a decent scope, base and rings. Trigger and stock change is optional, just make sure the stock doesn't touch the barrel.

I'n your situtation I'd go for the 111 package because I like a detachable magazine that much. (It's not $91 dollars more for that feature, since you can use your Leupold and sell the package scope to recoup some of the difference.) But if you don't care about the detachable magazine, obviously the Stevens make more sense. For a saving of $91 you end up with basically the same rifle but with your much nicer scope.

Grizzlypeg....nice looking firearms.....whats with the double front studs on the forearm for.....have you strengthend the forearm stock with a keyway as I read on a previous thread?

Thanks. I figure it will give me a couple of options for positioning a bipod as well as bipod and sling if I desire. I haven't strengthened the forend. This Boyd's laminate is very stout. I was lucky to get one before the discontinued them. Its called a Target / Varminter.

Did you read this? Did you measure your scope? You may need to use different bases to use that scope. The new 4-12 Leupy won't work with those bases.

Maybe the one piece base with Picattiny rail is useful for that. You can position the rings as close together as you want. Only restriction is the objective bell will eventually touch the base if you move it rearward enough.
