savage 116 in 9.3x62

That was a cool project.
I get what you mean, but I must add, there's a big difference in getting an old classic and a "workhorse".
I have many "classic" rifles in X62, and they were carefully chosen to still be all originals and in use shape. I usually hunt with my classic rifles.
I also have and use "modern" rifles, push feed and CRF, in 9.3X62. It really depends what one is looking for, a classic rifle or workhorse.

At this point in my life I want a workhorse that I can drag thru the bush and smack bear and moose with. I love high end classic and deluxe grade rifles but in all honesty they don't suit my needs. Interesting points of veiw in this thread though

Youre right Baribal, most of us end up with the workhorse wishing it was a classic.
Im the type to run the truck through the alder choked grown in logging road , paint be damned and lately the rifles have been bouncing around in the bottom of the canoe a fair bit , so I'll probably stay on the workhorse side of the equation.

Then again, one of my 9.3X62s could perhaps be called a workhorse classic. All the classic features are there, however the rifle has been used enough that you don't mind it being in the bottom of the canoe. The bore actually shows some pitting, but shoots as well as rifles that are bright with sharp rifling.

Function and reliability are not always directly correlated to appearance. :)

BwanaDave,
I don't think your comment was that far off topic.. and it was your opinion or feeling, after all.

My vision of owning / using guns goes like this; never be sour or even bitter of what you do with your own possessions. After all, they're yours and you paid for it. Sure, it may pinch my heart a bit when I see something rare being almost destroyed by such action, but h&&l, if it's not mine, what can I do?
I've seen people with very expensive or highly collectible guns just throwing them in their car or carrying it on a ATV.. and I personally often use guns that some people would hide in their safe to make sure they get no dings or scratches... guns are intended to be used after all.

Then, if you're in the Savage mood, go ahead, just do it. It's so easy to swap barrels on those guns and there's no consideration of devaluating it in swapping one '06 beater in a 9.3X62 workhorse...

I was interested in the euro model with the open sighted 20" barrel. That way when I bang up my scope I can just take it off and continue with the factory irons. I'm still debating whether or not to go 35whelen or 9.3x62. They both do about the same on moose and bear

Then the choice is clear...thsi is, after all, our home and metric land!:D
