Savage 12 F/TR

Hello Folks,

I am new to the shooting world and this forum. Eventually my goal is to be involved in F-class competition. For now most of my shooting will max out at 200 yards. Is the F/TR going to be overkill for that range? Ideally I'd like to grow into this rifle and not have to buy new as I push out my range. Any recommendations on caliber?

The "yep" was for recommendation for caliber.
Either caliber will work out to 1000 yards with the right bullet. F/TR class only allows .223 and .308. I believe the Savage has a 1:7 twist in .223 so 90 gr bullets will work just fine as well as the 80 gr.
 
.223 is a ton of fun to shoot. Accurate less expensive to reload and the low recoil means you can shoot it all day. Might have more wind drift though at longer ranges than a .308 but imo...your wind reading skills will make more of the difference than the cartridge
 
I have had the opportunity to shoot along side several members of Team Savage and they use the Savage 12 F/TR rifles and do extremely well. They have won many international championships and team matches. For the past two years, at our BC Provincials; two of the Team Savage members have shot the 308 win and the other two members have shot 223 Rem.
 
The Savage model 12F TR 308 is an awesome shooting gun. Capable of 15 shots inside a 2.5 inch circle at 800 yards. Not with me shooting, but my gun and reloads. My betterhalf won the medal. Ya I know. I shoot a model 12 F-Class 6.5-284. When it tanks I'll be switching back to the model 12 F TR 308. 6 ounce trigger!
 
I have had a 12FTR for 2 years now and loved it ! Very good gun for what your wanting to do and grow into. I personaly prefer the .308 because of the wind there is always a breeze here and and FTR did extreamly well. I am selling mine for the simple fact I do not use it enough and have picked up a Savage 10FCP-K in .308 also and I am very happy with it also.
 
Why not build a Savage/Stevens to suit?

Similar money and potentially more accurate.

I am a huge fan of the Savage products and am thrilled they have offered so many competition styled rifles BUT I am not a fan of the stock on the F TR.

But if the shape fits you, great. The barreled action is typical Savage and there are many many options to give similar or better performance.

If the F TR is in the $1500 range, you can assemble a rig that will do very very well.

I liked the Mdl 12F TR 308 so much I bought a 2nd. It still hasen't been shot.
Not till the 6.5 wears out. Which might be soon.
