Do you guys know what kind of weight I could get by cutting 4 in off of the barrel? I know I don't need 26 in for a .223 and I want to be able to use it for varmints too.

I can calculate it for you but dia of the barrel 2" from muzle must be known first.

I have a 12FVss and I hope the barrels are the same between the two(not sure) the measurements are as follows on mine-
20.5mm at 0"
21.5mm at 2"
21.9mm at 4"
22.8mm at 8"

I was thinking of reducing mine to 18" but then I think it would just be worth it to get a match 16.5" Shilen barrel and have a crazy short and super accurate 223 How are you cutting down yours?

i might just get my local gunsmith to do it, or do it myself and have my gunsmith recrown it

21.5mm or .846" aprox

For 22 cal barrel with dia of 21,5mm at 2" from muzle and when cut 4" off, the cut part will weight 268 grams or about 9,45 oz.

you guys are forgetting velocity you loose 300 fps for every inch you cut off

certain bullets have a higher BC at lower velocities and 22" barrels are good enough as far as my knowledge goes. Most companies dont offer longer than 22 for standard calibers

Don't know where you heard that It is more like 30 fps/inch.

i heard it from an old gunsmith / benchrest shooter but he did refrence it to the 6mm

I've read quite a few articles on cutting barrels and most will only loose 30-50fps per inch.

My 308 target barrels weigh about 1 ounce per inch when I shorten them. About 25 fps /inch.

How can you lose 300 fps/inch cut off? If he cut off 8" he'd lose 2400 fps. he'd be down to a pellet gun?
