Hi, my dad is wanting to buy a good target/varmint rifle as soon as he gets his FAC. So far we have established that .223 caliber would be apropriate for the sake of $$. I read a review @ gunblast.com saying that the BVSS is a great little gun. I'm wondering what the difference between FVSS and BVSS is. The only difference I can see is the stock.

any other recommendations of rifles for mostly target and a little varmint shooting ? price range is under $1000, and less $$, the better :) (the FVSS is $645 @ SIR)

You will not beat this rifle for the money. My advice would be to take the remainder of your money and buy the best glass you can afford.

Cdog.

Have you thought of the Stevens 200 in .223? A very underestimated gun for the money. Only $359.95 @ wholesale sports. It's very accurate and would leave more $$$ for the optics. Just my $0.02.

You'll just find that the stock of the 12FVSS is synthetic and will flex quit a bit. The 12BVSS has a laminate prone style stock suited for shooting off bags and it doesn't move (heavy). Your paying the extra for the stock mainly. If you have to carry the gun weight will be an issue.

What ever you do make sure you get your Savage with the accu-trigger, I love mine.

For just targets and the odd varminting the 12FVSS will work as the ORA is using some now. I've seen a few on the firing line at longer ranges as well.

I've got an older 12FVSS (pre-accutrigger) in .223, and have been quite happy with it's performance. I've tried the 12BVSS at an ORA event, and personally, found the stock to be a little big for my hands.

Lots of commercial ammo available, and for long range, pretty good to reload as well.

Either will be great value for money......

do you mean the stock is not as heavy and will move around easier? could you explain this a bit more please?

what are some reasonable distances for shooting targets and/or small game with .223?

thanks for all your help,

Get the BVSS and don't look back. Great value for the money spent regardless of scope choice on rifle. Buy the rifle first and put an in-expensive scope on it first if money is an issue. Then put a high quality scope on it as budget allows.

The often mentioned Bushnell 3200 10x would be a great choice to start out with.

I have the BVSS in 223 and love it. I also have a 10FP 20" in 308 that is a tack driver. You may save some dollars by going with the 10FP in 20 or 24" barrel, good enough for up to 500 yds. The varmint model is stainless and 26" barrel a little harder to lug around. If you just sit and call go with the BVSS.

oh man, I really want to get my hands on one now. I'll have to go to the gun store tomorrow and see how it feels. the one thing I noticed which I wasn't crazy about - the magazine is top feed only. Any owners have trouble loading these guns with a scope mounted? I can't see why it would be problem, just seems awquard is all.

stupid me, I just realized the heavy wood stock is only $50 or so more. that's not bad at all considering it looks better and would shoot better.

again, thanks for your input

i have the 12 fvss in 223 and i love it before i got it i was looking at the bvss and i decided to go with the fvss simply because of weight i do agree that the stock will flex quite a bit and sometimes you can notice yout barrel bounceing when its on the bipod but if you are going to hunt with it i would go with the synthetic after you get a nice set of optics on there you will realy notice the weight my fvss with a burris black diamond 8-32x50 and a harris bipod its not much of a carry gun anymore.

I have the Model 12 BTCSS and like it a lot. With some load help from Jerry, my handloads are delivering some very satisfying results.

The thumbhole matches my .17 HMR, so same drill for a much cheaper round for practice. I hope to bring this .223 to Jerry's infamous Summerland shoot this spring :p

Spend the extra now and get the wood stock if it fits. You will be spending the money later to replace the original stock on the 12Fvss. The model 12 Varminter low profile would be worth a look too. I love my 12 Fvss with a Bushnell 6x24x50 on top and while it is great I am looking for a new stock. Great rifles regardless of which one you go with.

I have a 12FVSS in .223 and I simply love it. I admit that the stock is sub-par but I get a long fine with it for now. I've heard of others having success with stiffening the stock with some pretty cheap DIY methods, you could search a round for some instructions. Also, you won't feel bad messing around with the stock during DIY projects haha, I made myself a cheek rest and didn't hesitate to start drilling holes.

I have a BVSS in .223 with a 1 in 9 twist with a Bushnell 4200 6 x 24 on top and love it. No problem with the top feed mag for factory loads but mine seems to like a long COL so it is a single shot.

Best group with handloads off a rest at 100 yards has been . 115, not the average but the best.

Will let you know what it does at 500 and beyond soon.

Nice group!! I opted for a 112BVSS, but in .25-06 and topped it with a Leupold VX-III, 6.5-20 Longe Range and a Varmint Hunter's Reticle. My best group so far is with handloads, a three shot group of 0.486", shot at 185 yds. I've got a number of other comparable groups but that's the best. For the money, the Savage 112BVSS will shoot.

Go for the Savage BVSS...or one step further if you like thumbhole stocks...the BTVSS ($950.00 at P & D enterprises Edmonton)..Here's mine Rings bases etc. not included in the price. Was about $1400 complete.

icedragonmx,

Have you seen the Savage Low Profile Varminter rifles anywhere? I'd sure like to see one in real life...
