Savage 17 HMR accuracy

Hi Guys...
I have a Savage 93R17 in 17 HMR. I don't think I am getting the accuracy I should out of this gun. I am getting 3 - 4 inch groups at 100 yds. I have tried swapping scopes and have also tried a couple of different brands of ammo. I thought maybe it was just me but 2 other shooters have tried this gun with the same poor results. I checked and the barrel is free floating ... all the scope mount and ring screws are tight. Any ideas or am I expecting too much out of this gun??

You are NOT asking too much. That said, I don't have a gun like yours. I DO have a savage, and I DO have a 17HMR. I love them both and fantasize about what would happen if they went to bed together.
17HMR (17grn vmax from hornady) is incredibly consistant stuff. It WILL do what you are asking, look to the gun.

I've got a savage 93r17 heavy barrel and it was doing the same poor grouping thing and i found it is very tempramental with its brand of ammunition.

It also could be i shot several boxes of ammo through it before it settled down to getting half inch groups at 100 yds and it still is fussy about ammo brand like any rimfire.
When its me screwing up its really obvious on the target.:runaway:
 
Mine ran a little bit rough out of the box. Probably under 3" groups out of the box. Within the first box and the religious cleaning / break in method I use it is getting 1" groups all the time. Off the shoulder gopher shots out to 200 yards are easy with the gun now. Only ever used the Hornady 17 grain V-Max stuff and have had very good luck with it. If figured if the "H" in HMR stands for Hornady the Hornady ammo is good enough for my gun.
 
Mine shot fairly poorly at first - I tried cleaning it, didn't help. So I tried not cleaning it, and after a couple hundred rounds through it, it'll do around an inch at 100. Just likes being shot dirty, I guess.

Here is my sweet little girl, she doesn't shoot as tight clean as she does when she has 30 plus rounds through her. Shoot average 3/4 to 1 inch groups @ 100 yds. and with no wind can usually get 2 inch groups on the 200 yard range. Just a fun little rifle. I have been told numerous times that all ammo is made at the Hornady factory and different labels put on the boxes. If this is true switching brands should not make any difference. I do not see any huge measurable difference in group size, only in price. Sure is fun too shoot.Put a leupold VX-II 6-18 power with fine plex reticle on it.

taffman : you lucky SOB... I've been drolling :p over one of those! I love the accutrigger at its lowest setting. Hows that grip for folks with pretty large hands?
 
I have a Savage 93R17 (pre-accutrigger) and it shoots great with Hornady Varmint Express V-Max (the ones with the red tip).

I have ended many a gopher with it. Definately shoots much better than what you describe.

Now, I did a couple times use some hollowpoints (I think they were Hornady TNT?) and they didn't seem as good.

The hollowpoints were a friend's. He didn't have a Savage, but had a Marlin. They shot like ASS out of his gun and didn't seem good in mine either.

So, I would suggest you try different ammo. As mentioned, the red tipped Hornady v-max work great in mine.
 
Stokka; it's only a bushnell sportsman with adjustable parralex. I've shot atleast 2000+ rounds through it since may! I'll be upgrading the scope at christmas!????!

Does not seem too small for large hands, I am 6'2" and a big guy and it feels like a man's gun. I had to put my name on a waiting list at S.I.R. in the spring to get one, but I think Savage production has caught up and they now have them in stock. At $464.00, it is super value for the price. The barrel is free floated, with the acutrigger set at 2 lbs. 4 oz. The flutes on the stock give it a unique look. When the boy's see it at the range, they usually pick it up, give it the once over and then the general comment is usually...Sweet Gun.
Canuckgunny, don't drool, just go buy one, you will be glad you did.
