Savage .17 HMR vs. Anschutz .22

Hey everyone!

I currently own a basic Savage .17 HMR 93R17F which I've been very pleased with the accuracy. I'm looking at a CIL Anschutz 190 in .22 and was wondering if I could expect even more accurate results. I know it's a bit of a vague question with many variables, but I was hoping to get any input possible before I make a decision. It's used solely for target shooting, no hunting. Thanks in advance for your input everyone!
 
I have a couple of 190's, shoot good with blazer never tried high end ammo. The range of ammo for .22 is far better suited for target work and accuracy should improve if you "do your part" Fred
 
It's been my experience that the HMR is always more accurate the the 22LR.
Having to search for the perfect brand/model for each rifle is fun and all but the construction/style/consistency of even the most basic HMR round beats the heeled lead bullet pretty much every time in rifles of equal value or construction.
 
At what range.
At 50yds/m the Anschutz would be as accurate (no better really) that the .17...at much less cost per round.
At 100yds/m on anything but a completely windless day the .17 will surpass the accuracy of the .22LR.
The Anschutz is a wonderful rifle, but it can't make up for the inherent deficiencies of the .22 at long range.
 
Apples and oranges, as you pointed-out. I think .22lr trumps .17HMR in lots of ways. Huge variety of ammo choice, low-noise options, inexpensive, easy to find, etc. Accuracy-wise, I think that depends on the Savage/Anschutz guns a bit themselves (+ammo choice +distance you're shooting +wind +experience) but I wouldn't expect a 190 to out-shoot a Savage .17HMR if that's you're question..? HMR has so much speed behind it, ammo is very consistent (in my experience) and generally not pushed around by weather conditions. Savages have great triggers if yours is equipped with an Accutrigger=another factor.

My favorite rimfire rifle is an Anschutz 1450, .22lr. Great trigger, very accurate, but a field/econo Anschutz as Anschutz guns go. I've had 2 HMRs, a Savage and a CZ452 Varmint. They're laser-beams out to 100 yards with enough punch to be a good small game rifle at those distances. Maybe it's my frugal side...but I have a hard time shooting pop cans @ $.35 a round without becoming pre-occupied about the ammo cost. How does all of that relate to you~well, probably doesn't...save for the fact that it raises the question about how your planning on using these guns. For target shooting~I get as much of a kick out of reaching out the limit of a .22 as I do making little tiny groups on paper @ 100 yards with an HMR. I don't punch paper as a rule though, I like reactive targets. Shotgun hulls full of sand and various distances~topping the list right now. : )

No idea. : ) Actually, I've been saving my 20ga. hulls in the wake of that experience pavmentsurfer, trouble is...they're all yellow! Almost impossible to see against the fall foliage. Got any red 12ga. hulls you could spare? lol
 
Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm just having a hard time convincing myself that I need both and that's where I'm stuck. I don't want to buy the Anschutz and then regret selling/trading in the Savage. I guess I'm best off to keep the Savage and sell it privately if I realize I don't need both once I get the Anschutz.
 
I was thinking 17 HMR at one point. But someone pointed out that they do make smaller holes in paper targets, and the holes can be harder to see from a distance if you use plain paper targets. One of the reasons I decided to go .22 instead.
 
I LOVE .22lr, I have a bunch and want more.

I see little/no point in the .17
You could reload one of the little .17 CF cartridges for little additional cost. Just too much money/noise for rimfire.

But realistically if you spend the bucks on good .22lr ammo that your gun likes, then it really should shoot similar to the 17.

The 17mach2 is a great alternative to the 17HMR. It shoots significantly flatter than the 22lr, and ammunition costs half as much as for the 17HMR.
 
I already posted in this thread..but since I'm sniffing around in my own thread about a 17M2, it's a good point stubblejumper raises. I'm still on the fence about any .17 rimfire right now, because for my purposes...anything bigger than a .22lr is a hunting rifle in my world, and there are more effective centerfire calibers for that. I feel like I make that point poorly every time I say that, so I'll expand on it just a little.

I think in some places, for some game, there IS nothing better than .17HMR. Here in S. Ontario, any game that a .22lr won't dispatch easily tends to be on the big side for HMR...save for maybe foxes and coyotes @ or closer than 75 yards. Since I've had not luck calling a wild coyote in that close, and since I've had groundhogs hobble/flip-flop their way back to their holes having been nailed by an HMR @ 100-130 yards, my opinion is what it is. Seeing a groundhog move after being hit by a .223 is an exceptionally rare experience, and I've never seen an HMR nearly make a 1 groundhog into 2 of them @ over 250 yards. In a perfect world, I'd have 3 of my favorite rifles in every caliber I'm intrigued by but in this reality...I need to nail the selection down to what I like shooting, and what does the job. One thing I DO find fascinating is the effect of those 17gr. pills at close range on small game. Gopher hunters (the lucky buggers) know this all too well, but in my own HMR days I was asked to clear some pigeons from a barn one day. From 50' away, those bullets didn't pass through the birds, but boy...the effect they had on them...

Anyhow, short story long, I think HMR is a really interesting hunting round with a narrow range of usefulness~depending on where you live. If you don't need that kind of power/speed/distance, you'll no-doubt start to resent the ammo cost if you shoot targets allot. Granted, if you have deeper pockets than I do, that might not be the case! I blissfully blast away with my .22lr, not a care in the world, when target shooting...have allot of that planned for this weekend in fact. However, unless I'm walking onto a groundhog field...or have some pigeon work to do...I'm looking at that box of HMR ammo and thinking to I REALLY want to target shoot with this stuff?

The 17mach2 uses a 22lr case with a smaller bullet, so if anything, it's smaller than a 22lr. It's also much quieter than a 17HMR if that is a concern. I had a 17HMR, but the 17mach2 is much cheaper to shoot, and my 22Hornet is far superior ballistically to the 17HMR for about the same cost to shoot if you reload.

Sounds like we're cut from the same cloth! lol Like I said, I'd like to have a few of everything. I'm so convinced that I'm going to get a 17M2 that I bought a box of ammo for it. Granted, won't have the cash until after Christmas probably..
