Bought a Savage 17HMR today. I will be putting a cheap Simmons 3x9x40 scope on it. It should be fun. The accutrigger is nice but Savage bolts are stiff (Pics when scope mounted).

If you don't like it, I'll take it. Every Savage rimfire I own, I love. Though, I've never noticed any stiff bolts, which seems to be a common complaint I hear. Have fun, and shoot a few gophers.

Anyone have a Savage 93R17 GV (or the 93R17 GLV left hand version)? Opinions?

I have the GLV. Actually, I was a little surprised on the wood of the stock when my came. I expected it to look just like the rest of my Savage...an inexpensive birch stock stained walnut colour, but the figuring on mine leads me to believe it's real walnut. Go figure.

Shoots great, but don't like the way the magazine fits on to the rifle. I find I have to keep my off hand on the bottom of it lightly while it's in the rifle to keep it from moving around ever so slightly while cycling the bolt. Otherwise that small amount of movement is enough to prevent the cartridge from feeding properly into the chamber. Usually the tip of the bullet ends up hitting the outside rim of the chamber, and the tip of the bullet gets dented.

This happens with both the magazines with my rifle...but if I keep light pressure on it, it feeds well. Not too big a deal for me, but if they got rid of that issue this rifle would be perfect. Can't beat the price.

My dad has the 93R17GVL. He likes it. However, he has a negative bias towards .17HMR's. I think he's used the rifle 4 times. Otherwise, it's collecting dust. Refuses to sell it, but rarely uses it. His MKII GVL, he swears by. As I said, he just doesn't like .17HMR's. Believes them to be 'pussy bullets.'

I have a GV too. I bought it 6 weeks ago but haven't had a chance to try it. I also thought the bolt was stiff.

The Mark 93R17 GV and GVL are the same models with wooden stock (L refers to left hand).

I'm at my dad's right now. It's definitely a heavy barrel and left handed. I was wrong, though. It's an F.
