Don't recall if it was here or in the SHOT show section but there was a bit of discussion about the new Savage 17HMR semi-auto rifle.

The claims of having a "delayed blow-back" type action intrigued me but there was no explanation or description as to how it functioned.

Recently on thefirearmblog.com whose RSS feed I subscribe to had a new post relating to it.

There is a video that explains the action's mechanics is some detail. Wish it showed more of the mechanics behind it, but at least we have a glimpse of how it is designed.

Possibly could use the same system in the 17WSM if the design holds out.

Does 17hmr get expensive to plink with? I've thought about getting one but it's hard to tear myself away from the 22's. I shot a buddy's 17 and it was sweet. Vaporized oranges at about 20m :)

For plinking, I guess the advantage is a little less wind sensitivity at longer ranges?

Also, good post. Nice to see something new.

It's around $16-18 a box of 50 around here, so expensive compared to .22 ammo, cheap compared to pretty much everything else. A box of "choot em" CCI .22 ammo 300 rounds goes for about $23 these days, probably find 22 short for about half that.

Vaporizes more than oranges at that distance. :) At longer distances too. :) I've felt fairly indifferent towards 17HMR over the years, had 3 of them come and go. Recently added a Marlin 917 to the collection though, and added a Rifle Basix trigger. Why? Got a chance to shoot gophers out west last summer with an HMR and well....I think I figured-out what the caliber is really meant to do. Fold gophers in half. :)

I do think the ammo is overpriced, and our weak Canadian dollar is making a bad situation worse...but I find it a bit amusing how often the cost comes up when discussing HMR, and, the comparison to 22lr ammo. HMR and 22lr barely have anything in common in my opinion, so comparing the ammo costs makes very little sense in the framework of that conversation. To me, it's a hunting round like 22WMR is. Every pull of the trigger means "lights out" for something, so, I think the focus ought to be on whether or not it's doing it's job well. If you're shooting pop cans all day with your HMR @ about $0.40 a round, yeah...you might wonder why you didn't bring the .22 instead. On the other hand, when no gopher within 125+ yards can stick it's little head-up without risking it being taken-off by someone shooting an HMR...well...I know I don't wish I was behind a 22LR at that point.

The A17~if it has bolt gun-like accuracy...and...if it comes-out in a heavy barrel...I'll be seriously considering one. Can't wait to read some unbiased reviews of the gun.
