Savage 1899 in 303 Savage

Hey guys

Maybe some of you Savage guys (like Mad Dog, etc.) can give me a hand here if you don't mind. The local gun shop has a Savage 1899 from around the 1920's. It has a real wierd serial # -- 5 digits with a period (.) after the first 2 digits. The shop owner is having a hard time nailing it down -- serial number doesn't match up with any of his literature.

I used to have a nice Savage 99 in 300 Savage. I should have never parted with it. So anyway, I might be interested in this 1899 -- the shop owner hasn't decided on a price yet. It looks to be in very good shape. What can I expect to throw for something like this?

When dating it off the serial number--ignore the period. This one is very early production--don't have my references handy. As far as it being a shooter--.303 savage ammo is scarce and pricy--if you are going to shoot much you have to reload. The early rifles are not as desirable as shooters and if used should only be shot with factory or factory equivalent handloads.

If it is a standard 1899A (round 26" barrel) in original condition, original butt, original sights, not drilled and tapped for scope, $250 is a good starting point. If it is in excellent condition it could be worth a couple hundred more.

If it has any issues at all, the $250 would be near top price.

Thanx guys -- don't know much about it so far. From what I could see in the display case, the action has the counter on it like my 300 Savage had. I do not believe it has been drilled.
 
With that serial number it should be around 1902 to 1903 manufacture.

Any details as to the model?

Barrel length octogon, round or half of each?
Stock design, straight or pistol grip, butt plate?
Type of sights?
Engraving?

I spoke to the gunshop owner again. He's a good friend of mine so I don't think he'd steer me wrong, but ya never know :D

Apparently, everything on the 1899 is original -- the copper butt plate, the sights, etc. It has never been drilled. He describes it as being in very good condition. I'll start out at $250 and take it from there.


On a completely unrelated note, I've just inherited a couple guns from my uncle who passed away recently. The most interesting one is a Marlin lever action 410 in great shape. There was also a Baikal single shot 12 ga., a Winchester 22 semi, a Ranger 22 bolt repeater and a real neat little Eatonia 22 -- a very small 'junior' gun for lack of a better term. Neat stuff.

When I get a minute, I'll take some pics.

Regarding the Marlin lever 410 I mentioned above, anyone know what one of these could sell for?? I'll get pics up later.
