Savage 1899 Lever?

My mothers husband has an old rifle that his father found when he was a young man in an old farm house on some land they bought. He showed it to me the other night, and I've never seen anything quite like it. At first it had a bit of resemblance to a very old win mod 88, but when I looked at it closely it was stamped model 1899 .303 Savage. It's a lever action with an internal rotary mag, and a flip down front sight. Really unique to me, maybe they are quite common, so I thought I would ask here. Was there a lot of these? Anyone have one? Just curious. KO

They are great little guns.

They were quite the inovation for the time. Simple, hammerless rifles that could shoot pointed bullets. The basic design never changed until 1960 when they went to a tang safety. Yes there were some design, hardness and length changes over the years but the rotary mag, trigger, sear and bolt assembly was basically unchanged. Neat old rifles, I have one or two of them myself ;)

Ya, I think I might have one stuffed in the back of the safe somewhere.

There were lots of 1899A's in 303 Sav floating around out there, not much interest in the 303 though as shells are hard to find. In fact, I'd almost bet that the Lyman beech front sight on that gun is worth more than the gun itself.

MadDog, a gun dealer here was telling me a fellow brought in a 99 to him, for evaluation for insurance purposes.
It was a 30-30, made in 1904 or 5, some type of deluxe model, with factory engraving.
The dealer said it was the finest old 99 he had ever seen, saying it must have been 98%, both wood and metal.
Would you know anything about a model like that?

Edited to say, look at my number of posts. I am not just H4831, but now I am 30-06!!!

99trix & MadDog...LOL.......a couple!?!?

I have two myself......my primary hunting rifle is a 99C in .308. Here's a nice pic of it below taken Nov 3/09 :)

My second one (the backup) is a 99E or F (also .308), I don't remember which offhand, with the built in rotary mag. The one in the picture has the removable 4 round magazine which I favor because it loads/unloads so much quicker, safer, and easier. I plan on getting a second 99C eventually as my backup and then putting the present backup into my 99 collection........it'll be the first one.

This bull moose was taken at 200 yards. I killed an antlerless elk with it at about 500 yards last fall. Since buying it I've also killed many deer at ranges varying from 75 to 350/400 yards.

I still have my general elk and whitetail tags and hope to fill those this weekend!

I have a take down 99 in 300 savage. Great round, great rifle.

I like the .303 savage round, if I found a 99 in .303 for a decent price, I'd personally snap it up. Although it's a handloading only proposition.

I'd love to know what the dealer told him for a price on that gun.

Can't really guess as to what model it is. Could be a $100,000 Monarch grade or a $1000 custom job or anything. 1904 means that Enoch Tue would have probably done the engraving on it. Would have loved to seen a pic of that gun.

Blairs gonna cream his pants when he reads this cause he's been on the hunt for one forever and now he knows theres one in Canada.

What's that guy doing? Are your relatives the burrowing variety or is he getting ready to den up for the winter?

Manufactured in either 1913 or 1914. Check out the savage99 page as there is a chart with features that will help you narrow it down.

Need a little more information like barrel length, guessing with the narrow forearm that it is 20" and that it is an 1899H T/D. DOM 1914 Pistol grip or straight stock?

Some of the best stuff gets passed down.

Unless we find it first!;)

Kinda reminds me of the guy that delivers my tar, says his brother has one with bear engravings on the sides and checkered and it hangs in his kitchen. Cripes I shiver everytime I think of his wife cooking bacon.

I'd like to see a pic of the checkered 30-30 H, just to see if it's actually factory checkered.
