Reading up on this rifle, seems to be a cheap and chearful way to get a single shot 30-30.
Thinking it might be a fun project to modify to a faux stalking rifle?

What would the going price for a ok condition one be?

No idea on the price...but in a 30-30...it's a spirited lil rifle. Mine is sporting an OEM 22 Hornet bbl and an EE 30-30. Folks say don't get a shotgun bbl for it if you see one... at least not one to shoot. The wood is a little weak where the wrist meets the tang.
Carries marvelous, slim bbl that tapers out to a heavy walled chamber section.

I concur. I'm pretty tough ( in my mind perhaps?) when it comes to recoil. But them single shot break open shotguns of a lower grade? They beat you up...a Cooey 84(?) in a 12 gauge is an ugly thing in OEM dress. Let's face it, Savage 219 is a mid grade unit at best. Not dissing it ( Was my Grampa's prized deer rifle...in 22 Hornet. Can't make that up...), I love it.
Not wussing out totally...but I can run a couple boxes through an M44 in 7.62 R... folks b*tch about them. You know you shot something with the 30-30 lights up.

As an aside...38-55 would likely be nicer in a 219. Bbl would be thinner and pressures lower.

I bought one for my girlfriend's first rifle. Had the barrel shortened to 20" and drilled and tapped for a one piece base. I reduced the lop to fit her and installed a recoil pad. JNot sure why people are saying they recoil a lot? It doesn't. It's a 30-30. Anyway, it's a short, lightweight rifle.
 
Awesome guns. I had one in beautiful shape, I regret selling. Would love to find a minty one with the matching 410 barrel and factory canvas case
 
I bought one off the EE a while back and was pretty tickled with it. Dry fired it a few times like I would any new to me center fire, DOH!
It’s currently at a gunsmith’s.
 
Striker fired, I think. Mine has had the firing pin replaced as well. Like JB did though, change the plastic buttplate too...mine is heirloom...so it'll likely get left alone. But it should be changed
 
As mentioned, don't dry fire them. Numrich has new firing pin assemblies and Wolff makes an upgraded spring. Cheek weld isn't the greatest with a scope but not bad. Boyd's makes laminate replacement forend and buttstock.
 
The 219 in 12 gauge was the first shotgun I ever fired as a kid way back when.
I’ll give a word of caution to anyone using them though.
If you pull on the trigger with the safety engaged it will prevent the gun from discharging.
However and here’s the catch.
When you then slide the safety ahead without touching the trigger the gun will discharge.
Maybe the one I owned was the exception but it’s something to be aware of.
 
Curious on how hard it is to find other barrels for the 219? Think I read that it came in a few calibers, like 22 hornet and 25-20.
