Good day,
I have a Savage BTVLSS in the thumbhole stock and it appears that at some point the action screws may have been slightly over-torqued and crushed the small wood "support" under the front of the bottom plate. No wonder- these things are made from .020" nickel plated tin and bend with the slightest bit of force.
Anyways, it was allowing the barreled action to rock a bit under recoil, and is causing fliers for the first 5-6 shots of a string.
So, I got to looking at everything. The barrel was contacting the front of the stock as well and there was an imprint the barrel on the stock just slightly forward of where it mates with the receiver.
I got a 5/8 deep socket and wrapped it in 220 grit sandpaper and opened up the barrel channel ever so slightly, then sprayed the action and floor plate with PTFE release compound. I then mixed up some 30 minute epoxy with some of the sanding dust and applied it to the areas in the stock that the pillars sit against, as well as a small amount on the entire floor plate inletted channel to support the floor plate more evenly. I also put some on the front of the receiver/stock interface, then placed a double cardstock spacer at the front of the stock and loosely assembled the action to the stock.
I'll try to get some pix after I take the rifle apart to inspect the bedding.
Do you all think this is enough to fix the problem, or is there something else I should look at?
Thanks!
