Savage 220 20 gauge bolt action.

the 20 gauge has a lot less energy downrange compared to the 12:

youre losing over 1/3 of the energy of a 12 ga.
not trying to talk anyone out of it, just throwing this out there as food for thought/discussion. im sure it would be more than adequate but you lose the wider ammo selection and versatility of the 12ga.

the 12ga Savage 210 bolt action slug gun has been out for ages, and the H&R break-action slug guns also - at a fraction of the cost.

would love to hear some slug-hunting veterans weigh in here with their opinions.

Thanks for your post!

I aware the 20ga slug has slightly less power and more drop down range but the benefit on getting the 220f than the 210f offset the difference in performance.

The 220f is build on savage long action has a better trigger better stock bedding its as close as a bolt action rifle you can get for the money.

Of course when money is not an issue there is always Tar-Hunt custom slug gun however the cost is about 4 times more than a 220f and I doubt it is 4 times more accurate than a savage (no offense to Tar-Hunt owners).

i know that triggers and bedding are very important factors for accuracy in a rifle, but IMHO assuming your stock trigger is not some 5lb horror, your main accuracy-limiting factor in a bolt action slug gun is going to be the ammunition and its ballistics. youre probably already hitting those limits with the Savage 210.

for all intents and purposes the 210 is a larger Savage action built for the 12ga, with a massive 3-lugged bolt.

a 220F weighs 6.75lbs, and the 210F weighs one pound more so that should help soak up some of the added recoil of the 12ga. in the case of the Hornady SST slugs i posted above, the 20ga slug is 250gr, and the 12ga is 300gr, so the projectile weight isnt that much different. there will definitely be a noticeable difference in recoil, but i would wager that it will not be as dramatic as some people might assume.

id love to see some actual range testing of a 210 vs a 220, to see how much of a difference the 220 action/improvements can make, if any.

btw im not trying to talk anyone out of the 20 gauge, just encouraging discussion since this forum is usually so slow. by all means please nitpick at my post, its mainly just conjecture as i have not handled/shot a 220F :)

manbearpig, appreciate your post and pics!

I have yet to handle a 220f myself but after some read some review on the net its a vast improvement over the 210f.

The action is smoother and the bolt opens with less effort comes with a detached mag like little things that makes you want to buy it.

Quite a few members on shotgunworld were originally hunt with their 210f but after trying the 220f they switched so savage must done something right that makes those people do the swap.

Also, the Federal 20ga 3" Vital-Shok pushes a 5/8oz Barnes at 1900ft/s leaving the muzzle so I think due to the latest hot 20ga ammo the difference is not that significant.

As of now I would still like to handle both guns before decide which one to get but so far I like what the 220f offers while I'm still doing my research.

I would too like to hear more comment from others own the 210f.

210

I recently sold my 210F. It was a great gun, but a pig to pack around.

I have since acquired a 20 gauge Ithaca Deer Slayer III. Has a 26" barrel just like the 210F but the Ithaca's barrel is fluted and well lighter because it is a 20 gauge :D.

no veteran slug-hunters want to weigh in with their thoughts/experiences on 12 vs 20ga slugs?
:(

Most deer are shot at under 100 yards, regardless of what you are shooting. If you can't kill your deer with a 20ga at that range, stepping up to a 12ga isn't going to improve your odds. I've shot them with both, and they don't get any deader using a 12ga, a badly placed shot won't be any different with one vs the other either. If I'm walking any distance, doing a still hunt or a stalk for example I take the 20 with me every time I'm using a shotgun, however all I am using is my grandfathers old Stevens that he used to kill dozens of deer with before he passed, with standard rifled slugs, and a bead sight.

Hello:

Does anyone know of any dealers that have this firearm (Savage 220F - 20 Gauge) in stock? My search has proven to be fruitless. :(

Regards,

Chizzy

My last information (about 4 months ago) from a local dealer and was told he contacted Savage distributor here in Canada and the 220f is not available yet in Canada at that time, not sure about now though.

Savage 220F - 20 Gauge - Camo Stock

Hello,

Well it has been a few months now since my last post and I am no further ahead. I have seen this gun displayed on Canadian web sites; however, nobody seems to have it in stock.

Does anyone know of any dealers that have this firearm (Savage 220F - 20 Gauge) in stock? My search has proven to be fruitless. :(

Regards,

Chizzy

210

I just aquired an unfired Savage 210 12 gauge pre-accutrigger from the EE forum, and holy bah-jesus is the bolt the size of a toilet paper roll !!! Got some awesome permission in a strathcona county shotgun zone with a farmer who has problem deer.

ill have to post some pics and a range report when i get my crap together.

my opinion from having shot moose and deer with slug guns before, id go 12 gauge over 20, just because I can.

I think the bigger question is which scope? Leupold Grand Slam or Nikon Slughunter ? hmmmm????:D

As for you Chizzy, maybe Prophet River can bring one in for you?

I dont have a savage but I do own a mossberg 500 in 12ga. It is fairly accurate with SST's and cooper solids 2.5"- 3.5" @ 100yds with open sites. Honestly it kicks like a mule, I only use it because its faster than my bolt action for doggin, the ammo is way over priced. I have since switched to cheaper rifled slugs with half decent results 2"-3" @ 50 yds and deer can't tell the difference its still an ounce of hot lead, lots of cleaning though.

Well, I've been using both 12 and 20ga slugs for over 17yrs. The 20ga is just an el'cheapo made in Brazil SxS the the 12ga is a 1300 XTR Rifled 24" barrel. Both are 3", the Win 1300 can take a deer at 200yds, the 20 is only good enough for 75yds. The double is great hauling around but for accuracy you can't beat the 1300. The ideal deer shotgun would be an over and under 12ga 3" rifled barrel(s)/ or one rifled and one imp cyl. I have yet to see either and scope able. Single trigger/select, auto ejectors, Knoxx stock.

Apparently Browning will be re-releasing the A-bolt slug gun. Only in 12gauge for now AFAIK. Might be another option. How's the accuracy on the Deerslayer III?
