Savage 22lr

I've got an affliction where I can only shoot a wood-stocked rifle. Teams of doctors have tried to help, only to have their professional reputations ruined. ;)

that’s to bad about your affliction! the FVSR is a very accurate rifle… did a trigger mod down to one pound on mine and it keeps up with my cz 457 quite nicely! and is a lot less money! cheers…

ps: added a thicker bottom metal so i could torque the action properly…

I picked up a 64 Precision a couple of months ago. So far it's worked well. Not enough time on the range yet to really tell. It's consumed whatever I put in it with no issues, even some old DND rounds

I like the look. It's a bit too black though so I'm thinking some paint on the chassis might help with that :)

Boyd's stocks have worked for me. I've ordered two of them in the last couple years and both were drop-in. One was a laminate and one was walnut.

I've not seen one in person, but the photos look great.

Adding up the cost of a rifle + Boyd's though, always discouraged me from going that route. I'm "thrifty" that way.... But I'll spend $75 to upgrade iron sights, and another $100 on extra mags. Go figure. :)

I've had pretty good experiences with Mark IIs. I've owned 6 and currently have 3: an FV-SR, an FVT, and a BV. I find they need a bit of barrel break in before they start really shooting well, probably something to do with the button rifled barrels. They are usually filthy when new and probably a bit rough inside.

The only issue I've ever run into is poor extraction which seems to happen mostly with CCI SV. I think it's cuz of the waxy lube CCI uses. You can thoroughly clean the extractors and bend the extractor clip to be a bit stronger, or some guys put on a second extractor clip over the first. Cleaning the chamber out helps. I've never had extraction problems with the slimy lube on SK for instance. Most shoot SK Std+ very well indeed.

IF you keep your eyes on sale prices, they tend to go on sale often. Savage makes and sells plenty of 'em. Savage is also VERY helpful if you have any issues, they will send parts no questions asked.

The only other detail is that the sporter-weight barrel MkIIs I've owned do shoot well, but point of impact changes with different ammo are larger than with the heavy barrel MkIIs.

All in all, a pretty decent choice. Not as refined as CZs by any means, but a decent choice.

I noticed the groups getting better as I kept shooting. Only 100 rounds through the barrel so far.

I saw the POI shift as well. S&B were way off POA compared to CCI SV. S&B also did not shoot nearly as well. I'll revisit ammo selection after a get a brick of CCI SV downrange with it.

I have an FV-SR. It has the worst mags. If you don't run it into the gun just right it spills ammo all over the place. Having said that I absolutely love this 22. I stiffened up the cheap factory fore-end with some epoxy and an arrow shaft. I filled in the cheesy checkering with some plastic filler, sanded it down, sprayed the whole stock with texture paint then a coat of olive drab topped with clear coat. I threw on a Redfield Revenge I had laying around as it didn't come with irons. I have about 1000 rounds through it now and it's the gun that comes out with me every time. accuracy is good; although I require only minute-of-pop-can results. Well worth the few hundred I paid.

brindle, did you try to bend the lips of the mags ? If they're spilling rounds that might help ? Is the 'body' of the mag tight or has it got gaps ?

Although I've never encountered that, I have about 5 or 6 mags that all work fine, brand new 10 rounders are only like $29, toss the crappy one...

White metal, don't bend them, they will break. Take the sharp edges off them with a needle file or... shoot a box or two through them to wear the lips in. Also mine likes ammo a bit on the hotter side, and never misses a beat. Most std velocity will have one or two malfunctions per mag. I think the rifle will wear in, but a slightly less stiff recoil spring would help also.

I confess I haven’t spent the time. I will give it a try.
In response to the question of whether I’ve tried bending the lips.

I don't have a MKII, Just a Sav-64. It has the cra*-metal mags. I thought (from pics) that the MKIIs were stamped metal. As for the 64s (I have 10-mags- I think?) when they get a bit loose I put 'em in a vise, close to the lips, and give 'em a few taps with a small hammer to 'snug-up'. 'Smoothing off' the sharp edges of these mags is done very carefully 'cause you can't 'put it back'.

The Mk II are sheet metal, and a better design; it is a wonder that no one has come up with an adaptor for these in the 64. I know some guys who modify the Mk II mags with a bit of epoxy and a file to make them work in CZ rifles.

Some guys modify Savage magazines for use with Anschutz rifles as their magazines are often expensive and less readily available.

meroh, brindle has a FV-SR, which I assumed he meant a MKII. Unfortunate he didn't pens a few more bucks and get the B22 FV (or-SR). I find the rotary mags great, tho I've only got ca 1500 rounds thru my B22-FV as opposed to BJacks 4-5000.

Yes it’s a MK2. I agree about spending a few more bucks. I bought it without looking into it other than trying to find a good price. Had I known about the finicky mags I would have upgraded.
