I recently bought a Savage 24 22 long rifle over 20ga. Eyes are getting older and kind of hard to focus on the open sites. The 22 barrel is grooved for a 11mm dovetail scope mount. But when looking at the receiver it is stamped do not fire shotgun barrel with scope mounted. Just wondering if any one knows why and if it is an issue or is this just something from years past that had to do with very poor eye relief scopes. Did a search and no info came up. Thanks, B-78

I have the model 24 campers special with the 20 inch barrels and the trap door in the butt. The campers special came with a vinyl sleeve for the barrel and action. I put a red dot sight on mine to shoot better (old eyes) and have not had a problem with shot shells or slugs loosening the sight. I have used both one of the RD30 and an older 1 inch tube sight with rings.

Thanks for the reply guys. Thinking I will try it with a red dot as well. Only going to use it to shoot grouse and a lot are shot just before dark so a red dot should make it a little easier to aim then the open sites. If the scope shifts a bit and I miss with the 22 the twenty gauge should hopefully still be close enough zeroed. And if I miss it is only a grouse, the dog will be sad but I should still be able to eat that night. I will only be using the 20ga with a 2 3/4" trap load so hopefully things stay put. I will have all summer to play with it before I actually take it hunting.

i have a 22wmr/20 and a baikal 223/12. i bought 2 of BKL mounts, they are patent design to stay centered on the 11mm dovetail compared to most mounts you find or anything i tried off amazon. bkl mouints arent cheap but very well built, grip the barrel well and dont move. little bit taller then i wanted but with a low pro red dot its fine. i bought the bkl from otttawa shooting supply. there was a place out west that was also a dealer.

Those BKL mounts look really good.
I think the Savage combination guns are outstanding for hunting small game. Have had one for years. Used it for arctic hare and ptarmigans.

Good choice. I bought a 24H-DL 22/20 brand spankin’ new c. 1967. Have used it all these years for chicken and grouse, plus the odd Hungarian partridge. Also a few skunks and badgers. Mine has the selector on the hammer, and is always a bit of a surprise when the 20 ga barrel goes off instead of the .22. (Forget to switch it over.)

I love these guns, I have a .22-20, a .22-.410 and two .222 Rem-20 ga. My buddy really wanted the .30-30 - 20 so when I saw one for sale at a good price I bought it to sell to him, not a problem as if he didn’t want it I would have just kept it. Later that same buddy bought one of the .22win mag-20. I hunted for years with one of the .222-20 ga with an assortment of shot and slug shells and a variety of .222 fmj, soft point and .222 cast bullets at about 1700 fps for small game, coyotes etc. That covers about everything I could have shot then.

Nothing to do with the scope mount and everything to do with recoil...first hand experience. At least with the old style 11 mm "rimfire" scopes that had a shorter eye relief than do the more modern, larger scopes for HP rifles, the shooter was bound to get a "Weatherby Eyebrow" from the scope if they inadvertently touched off a 20 ga round, expecting the recoil of the 22 LR round. It hurt.

30-30/20 , bonus prize on a grouse hunt
Mine was already d&t'd so easy to add the base
20 ga is pretty mild, but if there is room you could add a 3rd ring maybe? j i c
