I recently picked up 2 savage 24's, perfect for small game hunting. One is a 22/410 and the other is 22/20ga. I was wondering if you can also use the 22/20ga for deer in Ontario. I think there is a rule about the minimum energy for big game. I know that a 22 is under the limit and a 20ga is legal but I was just wondering if I would be legal to hunt deer with slugs and buck shot while carrying 22lr ammo for small game if I see something? Thanks for the help

It is unclear for me too w/regard to the Ontario regulations. My guess is you could tote the 24 for use as a shotgun, but not allowed to carry ammo for the rifle while deer/moose season is open. I would also suggest a call to the MNR

I e-mailed the MNR and got this answer

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry.

As per page 60 of the 2012 Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary:

“ When hunting deer, you may use or carry a firearm of the type permitted for hunting deer at that time in that Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). For example, when hunting deer during a bows-only season, you may use or carry only bow hunting equipment; you may not carry a rifle or shotgun for hunting other species”.

If you are carrying this combination gun during an open “gun” deer season where both shotguns and rifles are permitted weapon types for deer at that time than you would be legal. You would not be able to shoot a deer with the .22 however as it is a rim fire rifle. You can legally use the .22 to shoot small game when out deer hunting as a rifle is a permitted weapon type for deer at that time.

If you were hunting in a controlled shotgun deer hunt then you would not be able to carry this combination gun as rifle is not a permitted weapon at that time.

Once I hunted deer with a shotgun slug in the 20 ga. barrel of my savage 24. With only the slug shell in the chamber the ejector was not "tight" on the rim and so I took a fired .222 shell and squeezed the neck end closed. That way I did not have a live .222 shell in the chamber and it was obvious I had not recently fired the empty .222 shell in the chamber.

It was a shotgun/archery deer season and I did not want to be accused of hunting deer with a .222 which was not legal in Alberta or that season.

You could get a second 24 in say 30/30 x 12 gauge. I know there is on in the EE right now. Comes with interchangeable chokes too!

Need to plug my ad. I know "shameless"

24s are a very handy dual purpose firearm, however, like a multi tool, You can't beat the tool that's MADE FOR A SPECIFIC JOB. Respectfully Jim
