I have the opportunity to get my hands on a Savage Model 25 Varmint with the laminant stock new for a little over 325. I'm wondering how hard ammo will be to get ahold of and how difficult is reloading components?

I originally wanted to get my hands on a Savage Mark II BRJ but for some weird twisted reason everybody is charging a fortune for them. But this came up and I'm wondering if it's worth it?

Would love to hear your opinions!

The Savage 25 is not much of a rifle, but for $325 it is worth playing with for awhile. As far as the cartridge goes... meh... I'll stick with the .22 cal version. Unless you are shooting gophers, the .17 Hornet is either too much or too little, unless you happen to be a fox hunter, in which case it is just about perfect... not too many dedicated fox hunters around.

I never tried a savage but I do use the 17. It does a great job on fox and coyotes, it been a while since I bought factory ammo but reloaded supplies is easy to find. Sounds like a fun firearm to buy and at that price you’re not going to loose much if you decide to sell it later.

The mags for the model 25 suck, I had feeding issues with mine in 223 with any mag that didn't come with it originally. Took some filing to make them work right, but the accuracy was unreal. For 325 id definitely take it! 17 hornet ammo is readily available and most large and small gun stores. Even see it at good ol Can tire from time to time.

The 17 hornet is my favorite cartridge for ground squirrels to 250 yards. The Savage 25 is crudely made, and many have fit, issues and feeding issues, although they tend to be fairly accurate. Reloading components are easy to source, as is ammunition.

Can’t go wrong for that price. But if you do any shooting you’ll want to reload for it. I have a 25 but in a cheap synthetic stock as a CZ 527 American. Don’t mind the Savage for less than 1/2 the price of CZ.

For $325 just buy it. If you dont like it, you'll easily get $325 on the EE for it and not be out anything. The 17 hornet is a fun varmint round. It's a little light for coyotes, but out to 250 yards with good shot placement and little wind, it can do the job. For things like gophers and fox, it's perfect. Factory ammo is easily available and so are reloading components.

400 with a 17h? You a demi god of the wind? Even if you hit the target theres not enough energy left in that lil bullet to reliablely and ethically kill coyotes
Buy the discounted savage then trade it for an axis in 22-250
