Savage 25 LV

The only thing you can do to that rifle is carve your initials in the stock. It's barrel is not removable, and the action is cheap. It has a modified rimfire bolt that is too small for even a bore guide.

If you are hell bent on a cheap (ok... inexpensive) Savage-based project, go Stevens. If you want a good safe stout action that has become the paradigm of customization, get a Remington or a clone.

from what i have heard from newer remington owners is that the craftsmanship is going downhill

You better tell that the the 90+% of competitive precision shooters that use Remington-based actions. :)

I don't care for their gimmicks like triangular barrels and faux 5R rifling, but the actions themselves are as good as they ever have been. If you can fin an accessory for anything, you'll find it for a Remington.

Stay away from a Savage 25. I don't know what the f**k Savage was thinking when the dreamed up that concauction, it is a piece of crap that is far below Savage's very good reputation. Stick to a Savage 110 action (10 in short action) if you want an "inexpensive" project gun.

If you plan on going all out get a Remmy and send it to the gunsmith.

so you guys would chose between remi or savage (other than 25) for a work of the action?

Either. You'll find supporters for each. The real question is- what do you want to do with your rifle? Hunting? Plinking? F Class? (long range target shooting).

If F class is what you're interested in, and you're on a budget, check out Mysticplayer's site:

... and in particular, the article on How to Build a Long Range ( F class) Rifle on a Budget. Btw, where exactly are you? Maybe someone in your area could give you some one-on-one, in-person advice.
