I am just fishing for opinions from anyone who owns one of the Savage LVT or LV models in .223 caliber. I am looking at this particular rifle as a benchrest target rifle to punch paper accurately out to 200 yards. It has the Accutrigger and a medium contour barrel. The stock seems solid and it has a removable magazine. The barrel is 24" long with a 1:9 twist. As I am set up to reload .223 ammo I wanted to stick with this caliber. I am not a hunter so the 8.2 pounds weight plus scope isn't a factor. Thanks.

I picked one up last Fall and had it out a few times befor the snow came. Only shot to 100 yds. so far and working on some hand loads for it but it seams to be quite accurate. Can't change out the barrels on them like the other Savages but not a big deal to me. Yes I like mine.

With out fine tuning I got mine to shoot 1" groups out at 200yds with the 69gr Sierras,if you are getting into casual shooting it is a great little gun, just dont neck size your loads and try rapid fire. I did this and broke the bolt, in front of about 50 witnesses.
The action was designed for varmint shooting and is great for that,it will shoot small groups with the right load. And yes, Savage replaced the bolt on Warranty and it still shoots great.

Thanks guys. I am looking forward to the rifle. 1" group at 200 yards...wow. I am about to do some reloading with Sierra 69gr. Match Kings as I picked up 300 of them and I wanted to use them in the new Savage. I have to save my money for a good scope. I imagine a 6-24 or 32 power scope should be good. My eyesight sucks so I need a good scope but one that won't break the bank either.

Seriously Denn. Buy a Stevens 200 or a Savage with a 110 action with a removable mag if you need that. They are in the same price range and the quality is not even comparable.

I know some model 25s may shoot well, but they are not benchrest rifles and they never will be. There are NO aftermarket options and they are built to take hunting a few times and use gently.
At least with a Savage 110 you can upgrade the barrel/trigger/stock bla bla bla if you want down the road. All at the same price as the model 25.

I had a Model 12 LPV and it showed some serious promise. I ended up selling it to buy another rifle though.

I am not familiar with all Savage models but couple fellows at range have Savages in 223 rem with the 1/7 twist They shoot very well with 69gr but even better with 80gr Bergers they shoot under the 1" at 300y in good conditions, and are starting to show some very good things with 90gr Bergers. But not quite as good as Custom 700s with Hart & Kreigers 28", 1/7 & 1.7/7 twists.
This was shot last Sunday with a custom I know it doesn't count only 3 shots at 300y probably will never happen again, but I have seen groups of 5 shots in .500 &.600"

Like I said, I just want something accurate out of the box. I treat my rifles very gently( except maybe the M4) I had been seriously considering a Stevens but by the time the upgrades are done there is no Stevens rifle left. I just don't want the hassle of changing out parts and farting around. I guess there are some people who want sub MOA accuracy but I would be quite happy to hit the bull's eye at 200 yards. I reload my ammo so I can fool around with different bullets and powders. I think that the 1:9 twist will do well with the 69gr. Match Kings. Gee I wonder how much a Savage with a 1:7 twist would cost??

I went to the Savage site and looked at the target rifles but man they are out of my budget!! I did see a rifle though with a 1:7 twist. The Model: 12 VLP DBM but I am not sure I could afford that one either as the price is $1100.00 U.S. I can check with my local gun store but I'll bet they will want $1400.00 Canadian for it. I am paying $900.00 Canadian for the Savage 25 LVT by the way.

ht tps://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1187&section2=1724&ID=5013 Alot less than $900...has accutrigger and heavy barrel...also built on an upgradable action (the 10 I believe). Btw...you were going to REALLY overpay for that rifle. ht tps://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1187&section2=1724&ID=5021

Holy crap. $900 for a model 25. [insert random curse words here]

Well I can say with assurance that if you shopped around you will find that a good Savage 16 fv of fvss or fcss can be found between 580 and 700 depending on what options you would like.

If you have your heart set on that Model 25 knock yourself out, but don't fool yourself, you are not buying a "benchrest" rifle. You may luck out and get a shooter, but more than likely you will get a low end budget factory rifle that was meant to retail in the $500 or less range that is not upgradable. It is a budget rifle, not a precision machine even if the local gunstore thinks so and wants $900 for it.

If your set on a model 25 you should put a wanted to buy add on the EE. I've seen more than one guy post on the forums that they regret buying the non upgradable model 25.

I think the Model 12 VLP with detachable mag is around $1100 at WSS. Check the EE, I sold mine (1/7) with around 60 rounds through it for $900.00 plus shipping.

My local rifle store has to order in any of the .223 rifles that I want and therefore I pay a premium price. The prices I mentioned include the GST and ordering charges. I know they can't compete pricewise ( I was shown the price list ) with larger internet companies such as WWS or Cabella's. The problem is that I need to be able to pick up my rifle personally so I can sneak it in the house at an opportune time so my wife doesn't know, otherwise she would shoot me with it. She nearly sh*t a brick when I set up my reloading bench. She is very anti-gun. I know this sounds silly, but that is my reality. Please, no flames and don't knock my wife as she is a kind and loving person. She just has this thing about firearms. By the way, the Model: 12 VLP DBM which has a stainless steel fluted barrel (26") 1:7 twist is not listed at Cabela's or WSS. The Savage site MSRP for the rifle is $1021.00 U.S. I will ask my local shop what they want for it but they will have to order it. Yeeeesh.

Why are you hell bent on buying it from there. You can ship a rifle from anywhere. I am sure the local store will understand that you bought the rifle from somewhere other than there. Look on the EE, That is what its there for. Don't be scarred of a used rifle. most on the EE are very gently used. Some a lot of times are unfired. Even check other sponsorship like Frontier, Jo Brooks, Wolverine any of them. They may have something in stock that suits your fancy a lot cheaper than that.

I just don't want to see a guy buy a rifle that he is not going to be happy with. And to top it off pay a premium for it.
