Savage 250/3000 vs 243 Winchester

Well velocity and bullet weights are virtually identical. But the .243 comes out on top when you compare S/D and B/C.
The .243 is a true short case which allows for a short action.... stiffer, lighter etc. And factory ammo is available for the .243.... anywhere.
I would say the .243 has a slight edge from a technical standpoint only.
Real world hunting... it's a toss up.

Here we go again REDD :(

 Well the 250s is a shorter case than the 243 does that make it more better :)

Pull all the numbers up you want but in the real world, where game is rarely shot at the extremes (in untechnical terms) the wider bullet will always make a bigger wound channel if everything else is equal ...eg bullet construction, bullet placement, shot angles... at normal ranges.

As to the question "Which one is better for small to medium game?"

What's a medium game?? In the Hornady Manuel under bullet selection Deer is listed as big game;)

I'd give the nod to the 243 for varmints due to better bullet selection & pick the 250 for Big Game..deer :)

Besides like the 280 the .250s just has more CLASS :D

I stand corrected... brain fart.. you are right of course Senior about the case/action length. I was up late last night with junior correcting my alcohol/blood levels.:)

I did say that in real world hunting it was a toss up... my comparison was meant to be technical only. My favorite medium rifle is a .25.... a 25WSSM.

You guys make a great case for the 250-3000, and I have to agree with you.

I think this statement is the biggest reason to choose the 250 over the 243.

The only edge I would give to the 243 is the supply of factory ammo, but that just becomes a good reason to reload your own and shoot a Savage!:dancingbanana:

Redd's called Senior a brain fart a couple times already so it wouldn't be a surprise if it was taken that way!:D

Respect...I just don't get no respect!!

"The also say that the 257 roberts will do everything the243 will but better. Why not go a little bigger than the 250."

Or the 25-06...25wsm...257 W mag...just where does it end?
Question was 243 or 250:)

Well I personally have no experience with the 250-3000, however I would LOVE to try one in a good bolt gun! But I do have a 243 winchester, it is accurate beyond my abilities, has moderate recoil, and is very easy to load for. Bullet and powder selection is immense and very diverse, and load data is not hard to come by. AND it drops coyotes with extreme authority!:D
