savage is bringing out a bunch of rifles in 338 federal. wonder if they will have better luck.

I want a 338 fed or a 358 win. If savage came out with 16" barreled one I'd buy it in a heartbeat

order a barrel fro mystic and build one, I will be putting together a 20 inch stainless 35 remington in a laminate stock some time this winter when all the parts arrive

What action are you going with?
I'm on the fence with my .338F build plans.
I really want a titanium pierce action/bolt but am still trying to chew on the price before I swallow that plan.
Other option is to just get a remington 700 short action with a .308 bolt. Which is probably what I'll end up doing.

I have all the right pieces to put together a repeating savage rifle with detachable mag, the odd ball case size makes it tough to do without spending lots of money on a different action

I only sold it because I am doing a rechambering/reboring on a Ruger M77 MKII International from .308 to .358... that will become my handy .358 carry.

That'll be a pretty classy rig. I can see why you're doin' what you're doin'. I gotta keep my eyes open for your EE posting in the future and scoop 'em up fast I guess. :ninja:

My plan is to buy a barrel and do up a savage. They fit me good and I want a rifle i won't be afraid to use hard in bad weather. I have a couple other projects on the go but this winter ill decide on which head stamp and order the parts.

I have a Ruger 77 AW in 338 Federal. I replaced the factory trigger now at 2.5lbs instead of 7lb and hope to replace the stock with a Boyd's laminate after this hunting season. The rifle shoots well and I load 180 grain Nosler Accubond's and 48.5gr of IMR 8208 XBR. This is a very efficient cartridge, think about it: A 300 Win Mag has almost double the case capacity (87% more actually) and I can still drive a 180 grain bullet at 93% the velocity of the 300 WM. Admittedly the 300 will have a flatter trajectory over longer distances, but I am about 1.5" high at 100m and about 1.5" low at 200m. Not likely to be shoot beyond that range so I'm happy with that.

Don't agree... .358 makes the most out of the 18.5" barrel and short"ish" ranges... this is going to be a shoulder carry when bowhunting coastal grizzly with maxed-out 225 Parts.

What's the recoil on a 358 compared to a .338F, in a 6lbs rifle I wonder?
