A good friend of mine called the other day and told me the Sav.110ba 338 lapua his son bought won`t extract the fired cases. Some come out easy some require a rod down the barrel, he called sav. and they told him hornady brass is to soft and try another brand of ammo. I suggested he call hornady and see what they say, will be interested in the answer he gets. I have seen a few other guys have had this problem, anybody got any opinions that are helpful? Oh crap i shouldn`t have asked for suggestions should i.;)

Buy a Sako TRG or a Weatherby TTR or the new Remington one. Not that Salvage junk. That should sum up the upcoming couple of pages of replies. :p

Its the brass, Laupua works fine. We have seen this in two rifles, Hornady and S&B wouldn't extract all the time, even on moderate loads. Full, and I mean FULL length resizing didn't help. Switched to Laupua, problem solved. These chambers seem to be on the "tight" side. Also, make sure your brass is trimmed, even a little under spec isn't bad. There is lots of info on the net about this situation.

Has this problem only been on the BA model ? I have a 110 FCP HS precision and all I have tried so far is factory hornady 285 grn loads. No problems for me so far.

remove the extractor from the bolt head(just slides out) replace the facory detent ball with a new 3.5mm stainless ball bearing, maybe even stretch the spring a little under the ball, the extractor will have a better bite on the case head..........

My own experience has only been with BA models, research on the net for me only seem to bring up BA models. How are the factory 285 loads shooting for you?

I was just reading on long range hunting forum and I see that there has been problems with hornady brass in all models. I guess I just got lucky. I have only shot a couple of 3 shot groups with it on sight in day and it shoots under an inch at 100. I have to take it down to deadmeats range one of these days if the weather is decent and see how tight I can get the groups. I like his bench better than mine.

It reminds me months ago, boomer pointed out savage gun (Savage Alaskan Brush Hunter) is not for right choice for bear defense. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...-Hunter-in-338-Win-Mag&highlight=bear+defense

and a gal from this forum did not agree (she was wrong, obviously).

Completley unrelated. Boomer never mentioned this type of problem nor were they discussing the calibre that is having problems. Does this look like something anyone would use for bear defence ?

My thought was that the extractor was letting go of the case to easily, i haven`t handled the rifle myself guess i better go over for coffee and have a look at this rifle. Aparently the bolt opens fairly easily he said some cases you can get out with your finger nail some need a little more persuasion. Still like to hear what Hornady has to say about this problem, i`ll let you guys know what he hears from them.

That should make an excellent bear defence rifle, just have to persuade Courtney to carry it for you. Likely get a :kickInTheNuts: for your trouble.:D

1st hand experience: the Hornady brass IS too soft and the rim is just a smidge undersized compared to Lapua (the Hornady brass I have will actually fall out of a LEE trimmer head, while the Lapua locks in tight). Combined, it can mean a failure to eject on the 110BA or 111 LRH. Get new or 1F Lapua brass and reload.

A bit of an update, my buddy picked up a box of Rem ammo and says it worked fine. Limited choices in the local gun stores for factory ammo in 338 lapua right now.
