savage 340 owners, what scope

I had a 1.5-4.5x32 on one, and a 2-7x32 on another that I had and it was ok. I just didn't like these rifles with a scope. I still have the one my father left to my wife in the cabinet and it has the original sights. It gets pulled out every few years and never fails to fill a tag, but all shots are inside of 100 yards. My old eyes won't do much better than that. There should be room for a 40 but I much prefer a low powered scope like the 1.5-4.5x32 for the.30-30.

Oh boy, you owe me one now! After a good half hour I finally found a pic of the old 222.
Scope is a Weaver 4X, guessing a 38mm objective. I believe there is a good 1/4" gap.

Nothing like yote hunting in -40C to get a good coat of frost!:D

I can't help much there, the rifle is up at the farm and I am stuck in suburbia.
It is not a low mount by and means. This is the only other pic I have of it that might help.

Going from this view maybe I have my dimensions backwards, looks more like 3/8" clearance for the objective and 1/4" for the rear bell.

What scope are you going to use? Why a 50mm?

no reason in particular, just shopping around for a cheap scope with higer than 4x magnification..

I have a cheap Tasco 4x on it now, but would prefer a little more zoom...and have 3 other guns with 3-9 scopes, so why not something a little different

Never tried putting a 50 on anything, but I learned my 6-18 Leupold was way too much of a good thing on my 06. Each to their own, just don't want you spending money on a scope that will be hard to sell if you don't like it.

For the thrifty, a Weaver V7 might not be a bad choice, they are a "period correct" scope and although the twilight factor is not super impressive they are a good solid unit.

All depends on the chambering.
