Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and to semi auto rifles. I just purchased a new savage 64 semi auto. I opened the package and took all the sipping components off the rifle. I tried to figure out how to close the bolt. It seems to be in a locked position. I tried with the clip in and out. Tried taking the safety off and pull the trigger while holding back the bolt and slowly release it. I can't seem to get the bolt to move. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if this is the case but the charging handle pushes in to hold the bolt open. try pulling handle out. The 64 doesn't have a hold open feature with empty magazine. must be manually put into hold open by pulling charging handle back and pushing it into the notch.

There yah go, problem solved.
Then go to you tube and check it for yourself (op) that is.

Lol, I definitely looked in the manual first. I've never owned a semi before now. There was no problem with the gun, just the operator. It was a manual lock that was confusing me. I got it working and put about a hundred rounds through it. The gun works really good. Can't beat a semi with a scope for two hundred bucks. Thanks for all of the useful input.

LOL. Yeah like I mentioned, I believe most semi-autos have a bold hold open on empty mag. Not the 64. Nice rifle! Love mine. Ended up getting a nice 3x9 scope for mine as mine didn't come with one. Great rifle for plinking at the range and getting new shooters into the sport. Only downfall is the locking charge handle that can be a pain sometimes and the short mag release (that I see you are already looking to swap out). Enjoy it!

Lots of 22s don't have bolt hold on last round. Eg. 10-22.

Nor does the ak47. Hell i saw a gun from shot show that was an AR looking gun (not an AR, but quite similar) for $1500usd without it! Now that's stupid...

Yeah thanks, there is also an extended bolt kit you can get for the 64 as well. It might help with locking the bolt open. Gonna try them both and see how it works. Thanks for the help.

Many rifles, centre-fire and rimfire, do not have a built in "last shot, hold-open".
It is a nice feature on rimfires to prevent dry fire. Some rifles have the feature built into the magazine (follower), not the rifle.

Not sure if your problem has been solved yet or not, but I'm pretty sure my buddy bought the same .22 from Canadian Tire about a week and we had the same issue. We found out that if you rotate the bolt handle the bolt will release.
