savage 64 22 semi

Really good. It's an old cooey 64 design. Accurate reliable and mags are cheap. Not much as for custom parts but you can find a good deal on them. CT usually has a sale or bass pro. Old cooey had one flaw. They didn't like too much oil in them. There is a member here on EE that sells custom bolt handles for it.

I adore the 64. My first rimfire (and still a fav) almost 30 years ago now. Still keeps on chugging. They can be finicky, and have to be kept clean to cycle. A fantastic little rifle in production for over 50 years, and still being made today. Proudly Canadian, and pedigree spanning 3 manufacturers (Cooey, Lakefield, and Savage) with minor changes since day one.

That said(typed) I can't imagine buying a new one. One of the perks of the lowly 64 was they were affordable, robust, and accurate gems. In shops now, the Marlin 795 can be purchased for less than a 64, and that would be the direction I'd lean in. Get a good deal on a used model 64, and they are certainly little pleasers, but not enough merit to opt for one over a Marlin in today's market.

I echo what this man says, except I don't have the same length of experience.

The new ones have a safety... weird.

There is three or four of them new/old rascals around here.
The older ones can get all finicky, just pat them a bit and they usually
smarten up.

Personally I don't like them and would buy a 597, marlin 60 or 795 before I'd but another 64. Accuracy is mediocre and disassembly is weird. Mags are hit or miss. No last shot hold open and if you dry fire, you'll get a nice little dent in the breech face.

nice gun. i have one very reliable, acurate did 5 rounds 50 yards 1/4 inch group with tasco, and fed bulk. changed scope out for my ncstar boar blaster scope see what i can do with that. mags can be a bit better

They certainly come from an era when people could count to 10 all on their own. I've never borne witness to an affected chamber from dry firing, but the tenon o'er top can certainly develop a notch. Not that I condone dry firing rimfires, I'm just one of the few that can't count to 10.
