Savage 64 magazine question

For whatever reason these magazines are somewhat hard to find and expensive. Can any other Savage magazines or possibly third party magazines work in this rifle? What are they? Thanks!
 
The Savage, Lakefield, Winchester and Cooey 64 are the same gun with minor design changes as the years progressed with the only magazine difference that I’m aware of is the that of the original Cooey 64a could not use the newer 64b mags. All other mags for the 64 design should be cross compatible throughout the generations. On the realistic side what do you consider expensive? A new mag for $30 isn’t pricey by today’s standards.
 
I've seen magazines from savage at every single Canadian tire store that sells ammunition for $30. Made cheap priced cheap. Ahould work in almost any 64 other then the original.

True. See some now at Canadian tire... was really just confused at the fact its the same gun as 3 other guns.

Saw one of these on sale for $150 and since I don't own a semi rim fire I figured why not? It's probably a pretty mediocre rifle, maybe it's not even worth the $150 lol.
 
Actually, there were a lot more than 3 that were the same. Savage and Cooey produced them for other retailers - In the "old" days a lot of different companies sold their own brand. You'll see the Savage 64's out there listed as Sears, or Eatons as well. There were some other hardware chains that "branded" the 64 as well, but I can't remember their names.

Honestly, a working rifle for $150 - how can you really lose. They were nothing fancy, but they are decently accurate, and popular enough that they are still being made. Go for it!

You can't really lose for $150 I agree... I had a ruger 10/22 for years and liked it. Could spend $400 and get one of those but for $150 it's hard to resist lol!

It's a cheap gun, but it works and you can have two of them for the price of a 10/22 And you get the satisfaction of supporting Canadian made. As almost all Savage rimfires are made in lake-field Ontario.

Seems like you can have 2 of them, 2 extra mags, and 300 rounds of ammo for the price of one Ruger 10/22. Looks like the Ruger pricing went up a lot recently and not the Savage. I suppose that would have something to do with them being made in Canada.
 
I have the 64f takedown, had it a couple of years and although it is not as intuitive or easy to operate as my 10/22 the price was right and it is really a neat classic design, also my go to 22 right now. I have found the gun runs better with mags loaded to 8. load to 10 and I had a few issues. for 150 bucks it is a really well made fun gun. Only thing I did was replace the pot metal trigger with a Mcarbo aluminum.
 
I have an old cooey 64b and it still runs great after 50 years. The gun itself is quite accurate and a good inexpensive hunting gun.

Treat it well, its a great canadian classic
 
I've had a 64 for about 5 years, and after around year 2 the mags started to wear out. The feed lips are soft 'pot-metal' of some sort (the whole mag is this) and the rims of the ammo wear them down. After a year or so of bending and filing and such to make them work, I contacted Savage in USA. The CS dept sent me 3 NEW mags, to replace the 3 that I had worn out. About time for a new set again ;-) as one is totally f-d and the others are starting to mis-feed quite a bit. I haven't fired it since August, and I got a B22.
If you have the $$ and want an auto-loader I would suggest getting the A22. They're WAAAYYY better and more accurate outof the box than a Ruger for about the same money - or Less! I went with the B22 'cause its even more accurate and both the A & B have the rotary mags which are way better than the stick mag of the 64. Whichever you get, I suggest you also get the best scope you can afford, 'cause the guns are that accurate. I had the B22 shooting groups under 3/4" within 15 shots, including zeroing the scope. I got a Bushnell Engage MOA 6-18x50 and the MOA bars make adjusting for wind or drop very logical - no major calcs needed.
 
Well, I ordered a Savage 64 on sale. Got an extra mag. Total cost was $207 taxes shipping in. Seems like the deal of a lifetime if this is even a slightly ok rifle.

Might be getting back into 22 plinking in the future due to cheap shooting.
 
Good for you, just enjoy it. They are fun. Great for plinking.

There's a bunch of magazines on Switzers Auction right now. Ends tomorrow but there are basically auctions on every month.

Congrats! The more 22s there are in the world, the better a place it will be. :) As for magazine prices, you're doing pretty well @ $30. For me, it's a mental hurdle to get over like buying a half-decent scope.
 
Have only been using a single shot little badger for years... back to the semi auto club soon.

I am thinking 22 firearms may be the way to go moving forward sadly. That said, they are fun indeed.
