OP - I can offer another perspective that may help. It is very true that the 64 design is old and has limitations. The action is indeed a PITA to clean. The magazines are mediocre and a failure point. Accuracy is generally so-so, especially with the standard barrels.
BUT I have owned 4 different 64s, and currently own a 64 FV-SR. I have a soft spot for them, even with their limitations.
Since my first one, Savage has really improved construction. The newer ones have steel triggers (older ones were cast aluminum, and would wear through and break) and much better trigger springs from the factory, hence the trigger feel isn't bad at all. The 64 will never wear out, it's all steel inside. The newer stocks are a very dense composite and heavy. The Precision is the same action and barrel in a ###ier stock.
Best of all, this particular one is respectably accurate, getting 1" (and often under) 5 shot groups at 50 yards is the norm. The 64 will run SV ammo no problem. The short heavy barrel just works. No, it's not an Anschutz. Mystic's observation about fit and finish is justified too...the machining and finishing on the outside of the barrel and action is ROUGH. But, it was inexpensive, fun to shoot, reliable, and accurate enough for a semi 22. I can drop it from a bridge and I'm sure it'll keep working. It reminds me of the SKS...basic and reliable. But it is more accurate than one!
For a fun toy, you could do worse.
