Well....
I didn't always love my first 64...actually, hated it for the first few years! Jam-o-matic, FTE, FTF Ftp (failed to please). I was complaining to a local, old timer....he put me on "the path".
i) You have to clean them every 500-1000 rds. (I use break cleaner)
ii) They are "fussy eaters". Find an ammo that works in your's...(opinions here vary. Mine hates Winchester 333 but, other member's love them) I have good success with Federal Champion (bulk), any CCI (cb's excepted). Seems the round nosed work better.
iii) Don't oil/lube the action! (I hate saying that for any metal on metal moving parts). Lubing it will ruin your day.
I've owned a few different 64's. I currently have a 64fss (stainless steel Savage offering) and, it's every bit as finicky as the original with regard to ammo and, cleaning schedule. I have experienced and, saw a couple threads here what I would call a "serious" issue...the newer ones use a roll-pin to retain the extractor. It can slip down a bit and, quickly eat the pot-metal magazine. In one of the threads, the owner called Savage, explained the problem and, got replacement magazines.
Here's where I may seem a little disloyal...The 64's were always a touch cheaper to buy the other semi's (for a long time less than half of what a 10/22 listed for) with the current sales on Marlin 795's and, Remington 597's...not too sure (I've owned a Marlin70HSC and, miss it, I have a 597 and, love it too)
