Savage 64F Range Report/Review. Pics & Video

Anthony - Yes, run the action dry so it won't hold much of the debris from .22 ammo, always a problem. Just a tiny bit of oil on the hammer/spring assembly - not inside the trigger group. Pay attention to the sides of the chamber where it's cut out for the extractor and ejector - junk collects there. And polish the inside of the receiver so there is nothing to 'drag'.
I've found that with my 64 the firing pin wasn't striking much 'inside' the rim and was getting LOTS of FTF even from 'good' ammo. I found articles and y-vids showing that strikes 'on the rim' have less success due to variances on the 'hollow-ness' of some rims and varying distribution of primer. I lightly 'filed wawy' some of the firing pin to move the strike point toward the centre of the round, This changed my rate of FTF from ca. 30% to 0.0% (so far) and I've fired about 500 + rounds since that mod. One problem that the firing pin has is that it can 'move' a few thou-inches away from the cartridge centre. I commented on this on a post to Savageshooters and got the following comment back - Post #5 ->

Now I can't do that - don't have equipment to drill & pin - but filing the pin seemed to help in my case. I've also done the polishing and mods mentioned above and am quite happy with the rifle. Not much more to improve it, but I hope to get the trigger down under 2# - it's still a bit heavy for my taste and accuracy would improve. With 'good' $10/box ammo I can often get under 1/2". Mods are all pretty simple on this gun so try all you can.
BTW - One last tip -> I load my mags with a snap-cap first, then 8-9 live rounds. That way there is less chance of 'dry fire' smacking the firing pin into the chamber lip. One less thing to go wrong!!

Good point. Avoid dry firing this rifle. The firing pin will hit the barrel. I haven’t had my 64 out of the gun room in a year. So this long week end it’s coming with me & hopefully can nail a few Grouse while out bush camping!!
