Savage 93 Bolt Knob~best way to swap or replace?

Hey guys~deciding whether I should keep my bone-stock 93FV as is, or change the only 2 things I'd be slightly tempted to~the stock, and the bolt handle. With my huge mitts, it's the bolt handle that really bugs me, feels like I'm using my finger tips! I've found a bit of info about how to take the bolt apart, and have a new one machined...but I remember reading somewhere about someone who used a grinder or belt sander to remove the factory "knob" portion, cut a new thread on it, then added an aftermarket/tactical knob. Ring any bells?

Wish Savage would just offer the TR parts for sale at a reasonable price. :)
 
If your going to DIY, then it sounds like youre on the right track. Check with mfr's who make aftermarket bolt handles for Rem and Savage centerfires and find out what size thread they use, then decide if your existing handle could be threaded that size or not. I dont know if you could completely remove the handle from the bolt body, and D&T the body itself? It may be an option
 
I haven't pulled-out the calipers, but if memory serves....the article/post I read said they use ones with 1/4" x 20 thread size, so the factory bolt could easily have that cut onto it. In that same article, they had literally used a grinder to take the "ball" portion off. Not sure I'd "risk" that.
 
I used a dremel with a cut off wheel and took off the ball of my mine in less than a minute.

I then ground the edges clean and used a 5/16x24 Die to make new threads, and installed a custom knob from boltknobsbybill dot com. Add some loctite and your good to go. The only problem I had was the end of the knob coming in contact with the stock a bit. But it wasn't enough to keep the bolt from closing or locking into battery. This can be fixed by grinding out (plastic stock) or sanding (wood) the bolt arm groove of your particular rifle stock.

I'll toss a picture up for reference later on today.

I've seen pics where some have cut back even further on the bolt arm, but I wanted a swept back look to mine versus the bolt knob sticking straight out.

thanks ... good ole Krylon from crappy tire.

Used 3 coats of tan and 2 of clear satin, took steel wool to it between coats. Was a quick job, you can see the "orange peel" look of the finish because I held the can to far. This stock is my original one and temporary. I am going to go to a Boyds in the near future.
 
Heads up on the Krylon paint.
If you put bug spray with deet any where near it the paint will smeer or peel. I found out the hard way.
Still looks great thou.

I thought it looked like krylon but the gloss threw me off
