Hello, I recently got one of these rifles and LOVE it. (new to .17 :) ) After a couple of outings in the field, I'm wondering if I should have opted for the standard/synthetic version instead. I dig the laminate/thumbhole for bench rest, but think I might prefer the other for hunting. Question is this;

Where can you buy a stock alone for this gun, synthetic/heavy barrel. Don't mind used/very used either. Also, is it an easy swap?

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

.22LRGUY,
I too just got a Savage .17HMR. Took it in a trade. Where as you've got the laminate stock mine is the synthetic stock version, althought I think everything else is the same. If you can get a synthetic stock I would go for it. A friend and I were walking/shooting gophers awhile back; he with his .22 BTVS and me with my Cooey. I figure I was carrying almost HALF of what he was!! My synth. stocked .17 shoots great, isn't too heavy, and can withstand the various bumps and scuffs that will come along with shooting gophers. While I may see if Boyds or someone else makes an aftermarket stock for it, right now I'm really happy with mine.

PS-Swapping the stocks is easy, just loosen and remove the screws from the laminate stock, put action into synth. stock, tighten screws, shoot!

Thanks for the input. It actually WAS my first hog hunt that got me thinking DAMN, there must be a better way! :eek: Love the look of it, it does the job...just too heavy for long carries. Guess I have to go to Savage...?

The synthetic is difficult to bed properly though, and rarely are as accurate as a well bedded laminate.
I agree, the rifle is heavy, alot of that is in the barrel though.
You should consider a sporter barrel .17, if weight is your primary concern over tack driving accuracy.
