Savage 93R17 accuracy?

Hey guys..... Recently i picked up a Savage 93R17 BSEV, scoped it with a Vortex Viper 5.5-20x44PA scope. Nice package. Anyways, since we've had a solid 30 days of hard-core wind, i havmt been able to sight it in properly till last night/ this afternoon. I bought a few different brands of ammo, trying to find the best for the rifle. out of all the 5 shot groups, my best was with Hornady 20 gr. XTP. It was about a 1" group with 3 shots touching each other. The worst was with CCI TNT 17 gr. these are the brands i tried. I used a shooting table with sand bags. I had the rifle solidly planted. Even with the scope at 20x, it was held dead on for the most part.... the wind was very light, getting worse as the afternoon progressed, so some of it i can attribute to the wind, as the afternoon went on. I'd really like to see this thing do 1/2" groups at 100 yards.... (the distance i initially sighted it in).

one of my buddies suggested i try Remington bullets, as he says he gets the best results with them. I'll get some next time im in the "city". ;-)

Hornady 17 gr VMAX- Decent
Hornady 20 gr XTP - Best
Federal Premium V-Shok 17 gr. - mediocre
CCI TNT 17 gr. - poor

anyways besides finding the right ammo, what can i do, if anything to make the gun shoot more accurate? She's a bone stock rifle, except i lightned the trigger a bit. The way i see it, its got the helical fluted free floating barrel already, what more can be done?

any help is greatly appreciated.

remmington accutip 22wmr shot a little better then the hornady vmax. but due to the price i went with hornady stuff.
i think at 100yrds thoes groups are pretty good with the 20gr.
if you arent happy keep shopping for ammo

Ya, i pick them up at "Manitoba Hydro".... they have a big stack at the office on the front desk, take as many as you want, they told me... ;-)

and i guess i'll pick up some more brands of ammo. and like Regulate34 said, the remington stuff is like 15.00 a box here.... (Yikes), i'll pick a couple up tho....

and so far the Hornady 20 gn. is the winner. But i sure noticed the first few shots are wild, as the barrel warms up they creep down!

another thing that is troubling me is i'm getting the odd light primer strike. Today I had at least four. and it wasn't ammo specific. The rifle only has about 100 rounds down the pipe. ai dunno, Id think i shouldnt get ANY when its this new?

Was actually impressed that the 15.5 grainers were the best in the windy situation and 1/2" vertical on them.The heavier ones(all Hornady) were not nearly as close.Just seems to vibrate best with the light pellets.
 
They are full of sh!t. That is only a politically correct logo.
They secretly want you to shoot at the insulators
because they make sompin like $70/hr emergency over-time.

Thats totally the opposite of my experience...! The lighter stuff went big on me. I'll be trying all kinds in the near future..... but if the 20 gr consitabtly does what it did, well, that'll be my winner.

The firing pin and extgractors are made out of stamped parts. There may be slight burrs on the edges. If you take them out of the bolt, lay them on a flat stone or emery paper and move them around a bit to take off the edges, you might inprove the firing pin fall. Also, be aware when reassembling the extractors, there are a left and a right one. The one with the hook goes on the right and the one with the rounded hook on the left.

If this still persists, the actual part of the firing pin that hits the rim is rebated slightly from the end of the tip. In other words, there is a projection on the end of the firing pin that hits first if the rifle is dry fired. With a cartridge that has a bit thinner rim, this end of the firing pin may hit the end of the barrel first, and the actual rebated portion of the tip of the firing pin may not go in far enough to crush the rim and ignite the cartridge. A couple of swipes with a fine file on the end of the firing pin will reduce the length of this projection without touching the actual contact of the firing pin that hits the rim, but will allow the firing pin to travel forward a few extra thousands of an inch for better ignition. Deburr any edges when you do this.
