Savage 93R17FV barrel break in procedure

Ok, I just bought my very first brand new rifle and it's a savage 93R17FN. bought it for plinking targets for range days as well as hunting smaller critters like, squirrels, crows up to coyote and anything else under 60lbs I consider a varmint. I heard about how accurate they are and I have shot a couple of different models, it's definitely not my first rifle. Now since the majority of my rifles are savage 99's they have all been shot before I bought. Never really worried about break in. but I hear a lot of chatter about barrel break in for new rifles.

I went to the savage site and I posted the link on this thread. It seams like a very time consuming thing to do before I can start having fun with it. For all intensive purposes I will do it if necessary, but is this really required, and if not what would some of you gunut'rs recommend. I also dusted off a buck ridge horizen 3x9 scope I had in the locker but never used, took it off a trade I sold. Anyone have experience with these scopes, they are made optronics.

Open to suggestions for break in procedure and scope for this rifle.

This is a similar procedure that I've seen suggested from many sites.

I'm a new shooter myself, and never knew they needed a "break in". So when I got my first .22 I just cleaned it, went to the range, and ran 500 rounds through it.
Same with my pistols. Clean, then go to range.. few hundred rounds. No break in.

Only AFTER did I find out I should have "broken in" the gun. DOH!

I have a Savage 93R17 with the stainless bull barrel. I got it, cleaned it and shot the hell out of it without any sort of break in procedure. It is a laser. I would just go out and shoot it and worry less about barrel break-in. In my opinion, the break-in period is when you shoot it.

Also - 'for all intents and purposes' :D

I break-in all my barrels because it makes me "FEEL" better.
I try to remove as many variables as possible, then kick my butt when I miss the target.
Have not been able to sit down for months..................

I saw a guy at the range back in the summer trying to "break-in" his new gun's barrel. He would take one shot at 50m. Then go back to the table where he had a vise set up. Proceed to install a bore guide, scrub his barrel with Hobbes-9, and patch it about 20 times. He did this for about three hours. I finally couldn't take it anymore and asked him what he was doing. He said he was "properly" breaking in his barrel. It was a .223 bolt action.

wtf? I had to turn away.
