I have a savage 99 in 308 win and just noticed at the range today that when you work the lever the only way to de-#### it is to dry fire it, I think it shouldn't if I hold the trigger while I am closing the lever, is there something wrong with my rifle?

If you have a post 1960 99 with the tang safety, that's normal.
Only pre 1960 99's with the lever safety can be de-cocked by keeping the trigger pulled while closing the lever.

That was a major complaint when Savage made the change in 1960, some say 1959 was the last of the real 99's.
1960 was also the year they moved from Chicopee Falls Mass. to Westfield Mass.
